On Offsiders yesterday Gideon Haigh talked about how the strength of the response, which is far from isolated to cricket or even sports fans, is a sign of how deeply ingrained cricket is in Australian culture and the Australian psyche. It's a very good point IMO.

So I was speaking to a doctor the other day and he said that Hughes' blood vessel was torn and that this can happen due to a sudden jerk/stretch. He said that there was an example of this, where the same thing happened to someone on a rollercoaster. He also said that Hughes was more prone to this than most people, and that a padded helmet would not have saved him.

Interesting but don't know how credible this is.

Why would you not take the word of the physician who treated Hughes (who specifically said the injury was caused by the ball hitting him in the neck) over that of someone who had no involvement in the matter whatsoever?

I've heard a few doctors say it was a combination of both the impact and the twisting of the neck tbf.

Michael Clarke lends support to Sean Abbott

“I would like to say some words about Sean Abbott. This is a tremendous young man with a bright future whose life has changed forever by this accident. And that’s what it is - a freak accident.”
“No-one — not one single person — blames him in any way for what has happened. He deserves our full support, he will absolutely have mine whenever he needs it, and I know that also goes for the entire Australian cricket community. Sean, when you feel like getting back on the horse mate, I promise you that I will be the first to strap on the pads and go stand up the end of the net to hit them back at you. It’s exactly what Hugh Dog would want us both to do.”

Man he was so gutted. I mean all of the panelists were sad but Haigh was just absolutely distraught. Still spoke well as he always does.

RIP. One of my favourite left handed batsmen, so much potential, and most importantly, so down to earth.

I Like This

As he walked towards the heavens gates, he stood there all alone And turned his face back to the world, and the country he had called home He saw the tear stained faces That spanned Australia wide For the little bloke from Macksville Who tragically had died. He spun to face Saint Peter, with his cap and bat in hand he asked "Please don't let my friends and family suffer, Just help them if you can" Saint Peter embraced the saddened Man and held him strong and true "They'll never be alone my son, they'll forever still have you." "Although you had to leave them, And that world you did depart. A piece of you forever remains in each of their sad hearts" As Hughes had turned to enter heaven through the stunning Golden gate A voice yelled from the shadows "Come over here now mate". Bradman stood there grinning with a bat and ball in hand. He put his arm around Phil's shoulder and said "You're up to bat young man". RIP Phillip

Is there a picture of the shot he played to one of the South African quicks on the 2011 tour where he hit 80-odd? Just dance down the wicket and absolutely creamed it through the offside.

This will just about be the hardest day ever for Aussie cricket, let alone Macksville. If anyone's ever been there, it's a tiny little place. The joint will be torn apart. :(

Used to work at my uncles Macksville Caltex station (opposite the public swimming pool) during my Uni breaks. It's a fabulous close knit community, and the wound will cut extra deep.

Heard the population will be doubling for the day.

It's great that Australian cricketing royalty such as Gilcrhrist etc. are attending today even though they may have had limited contact with Phil

Looking at the live coverage...man this will be sad...

I think his youth and promise, and that he died while playing, gives it that extra edge of poignancy
