So Trent Boult has said this will be his last world cup, which probably also means the last group game will be his final game for NZ.

I know we've had mixed emotions about his wanting his cake and eating it over the past 2 years, but I think we'd all agree it's been a joy watching him play for NZ ever since he debuted at Hobart. His bowling in the 2015 World Cup was probably the highest standard of ODI bowling I've ever seen from somebody not called Shane Bond. And his test career was something else. The guy was an absolute joy to watch when on song. When you combine his test and LO accomplishments, I'm pretty happy to say he's had the 2nd best career of any New Zealand bowler. Thanks for the memories Trenty.

Well, at least give him a go.

Of those guys mentioned, most of them I wouldn't take to Sri Lanka because they'll likely be in the Asia Test squad, the England Test squad, or both. From the FTP, it looks like a fast turnaround, & I'd rather keep the Test guys together, so they should come straight home from India. Hopefully, the end of the India tour leaves enough time for the Test guys to sneak in a round of PS to re-familiarise with home conditions.

Interesting wording of Trent said, however - he said it will be his last World Cup, but also said 'some great memories' with Southee and 'hopefully a couple more to come'. Unless he's talking about some final memories demolishing PNG, that says to me he hasn't mentally shut the door on playing for NZ.

But the door should be shut, in an ideal world all the greats would get a perfect swansong but his should be in a meaningless T20 pool match against PNG.

Agreed on what you say, there have been some incredible moments and he has been a hell of a skillful bowler at the top level. Big call that he's had the 2nd best career but when you think about it, it's hard to argue.

I don't have any problems with him wanting to have his cake and eat it, although I think he should have played the Mount Test against England when we were all over the show with our bowling stocks. My issue is, that I think (hope) we'll work it out in the future to allow guys like him to play franchise cricket and international cricket, but the fish heads at the ICC, NZC etc have got it hopelessly wrong that we've got to a point where someone like Trent couldn't comfortably have done both.

Been a great servant to NZ Cricket has Boult, and deserved a much more fitting exit to T20 WCs than not even qualifying for the Super 8s.

Hard to see him playing any further ODIs or T20Is from here either, even If I do hold a tiny bit of hope of a last Test hurrah in the 4 Test series in Aust 2026-27 -assuming he's still bowling well enough...

Love your optimism fella & call me Mr pessimist but I can't say I feel the same about the post Boult/KW era when it comes to Tests & ODIs, although I do think fresh new T20 personnel might work in our favour in that format if we can load-up attacking players & adopt a more bullish batting approach.

This take is pretty boiling, but at this point, I don't want any of the oldies going to Australia in 26-7, right to Kane. They've all had their chances & failed miserably.

I don't want a bunch of mentally blocked losers going into the Lion's Den. I want to see guys with proper fight in them, some guys with actual fire. It's not like they don't exist.

Absolutely, this was a reversal of the 50-over WC in which the bowling was a much bigger issue. Given something in the conditions to work with, the attack did its job. The batting has to be the bigger worry though, not just in this format.

Kane for a final crack. Mitchell (teenage years in Perth) and Conway (SA) have never played a test in Australia but probably have the game for it. Despite his MCG 100 and back foot play I don't think Blundell could make it. Chu just has a real presence with the gloves and that swagger would be great.

If he's only bowling 4 overs in T20 leagues, how will he bowl 20 overs a day?

I would far far rather have a fit Kyle Jamieson than Boult.

Dylan Cleaver reporting this morning that KW will turn down an NZC contract.

Apparently to free him up for overseas leagues instead of Super Smash, while still being available for tests. Hopefully that's how it works out.

Will have to see how it plays out. Not an ideal situation when your current captain opts out of a central contract.

I know it's economies of scale or whatever it is, but the fact we are about the only major nation without a proper franchise competition, with overseas players and some level of international viability to it, is pretty tough to take and probably needs to be remedied very quickly. Even going back a few years ago, we attracted played like Warner, Herschelle Gibbs, decent English names like Peter Trego, Graham Napier, Tymal Mills etc. Now it's a competition that even our local guys skip over. NZC might wrap it in glitter and sell it as a perfect opportunity to grow the next wave, but really it's a turd.

Nationwide global clubs view NZ sport as a resource pool rather than a fellow competitor. We supply about a third of the NRL, various big sports like soccer take their pick of the few who play that, and only the All Black jersey protects rugby.

I actually loved the Super Smash last season. Most invested I've ever been in a T20 competition.

Given I'm not really who these leagues market to it might actually be a bad sign though.
