Nathan Smith continues to travel pretty well in his FC county stint with Worcestershire

6 matches; 383 runs @35 with the bat & 19 wickets @25 with the ball
I don't mind him not going on the Asia tour. He's never played there, & sending him into Asian conditions to start your Test career is a bit mad.
However, he must be selected to play England, & not just as a waterboy: give him a debut at the Basin. Southee needs to be eased out of the team; there are precious few Tests next year, & they're better off being spent with Smith or maybe Duffy playing sidekick to Henry.

Agree he should be there or thereabouts. Not sure what the latest is on Jamieson's injury, but I like the prospect of the four-pronged bowling attack being Henry, O'Rourke, Jamieson and then either Smith, Sears and Ferguson (who I still hold out hope as a Test prospect) competing for that 4th spot, with Duffy behind that lot.

Not sure even Southee's biggest fan (yes, Gary Stead) could justify him remaining in the Test side now, even if it was obvious to some of us 12 months ago.

Yeah, Nathan Smith is the guy. Him and Henry new ball bowlers, O'Rourke first change, then Sears/Duffy in the mix. Really don't back in Jamieson's body to be involved anymore.

But all of us have this sinking feeling it'll be Southee and Henry instead...

I'd be happy with T20Is, considering that's the last format where he's still preforming.
Both he & Williamson will likely be in the WC side, sigh. Even if my XI from the squad they've picked would be;

Allen
Conway+
Ravindra
Mitchell
Chapman
Phillips
Bracewell
Santner*
Henry
Ferguson
Boult

Good batting depth that with the bonus back-up spin options of Phillips & Ravindra if required & Neesham in the wings if Bracewell isn't performing.

*Course it won't happen

I was mostly thinking about after this T20WC. Really, I had the post-CT home series vs Pakistan as the "Tim Southee Farewell Series".

So world cup fever is about to strike me and feeling quite optimistic about this group of players bringing home our first ever world cup. Time to back them full tilt despite 1 or 2 dubious selections that always linger in any squad. Lots of variety in bowling and batting + world cup exp now. Convincing myself to ignore the predictable semi final choke against pak or aus or icc lmao. #blackthebackcaps

Main man remains the same for me as last year in the odi wc and its the big man daz mitchell. Jimmy neesham is flirting with bringing home impossible chases in the biggest of pressure cooker situations consistently, so for me he HAS to be there in the starting 11. Handles it better than anyone and would back him to ice a big nervy chase in a final benneth stokes style. Ravindra was the bolter in that odi wc, excited to see who it can be this time around.

Let it be known this was your fault

I see the next Men's T20 WC is in Feb/Mar 2026 (India and SL), then we host the 2028 one with Oz and there is a tournament at the 2028 Olympics but only 6?? teams so we mightn't be in it, especially if Australia "represents" Oceania.

Very few (3-5) will probably make the next WT20. Interesting times.

On the bright side, the kiwis who aren't playing for NZ are having a pretty good tournament. Logan van Beek's effort v SA was pretty epic: steadied the ship with the bat, bowled a tight spell taking two vital wickets with the ball and held a massive skyer at a crucial point in the game. Tim Pringle looks to have been bowling well too.

As far as selection for the ODI team is concerned, Kristian Clarke is about the main guy screaming "PICK ME!" with his 34 @ 21.88 over the last 2 FT seasons, coming 3rd top wicket taker in 22-3 & topping the chart in 23-4. I would pick him to go to SL this November, & if he's good there, get him in the squad for the CT, even if just as a spare bowler. Rather him than Southee (who shouldn't have been in the squad for the 23WC).

Is Shipley an option? Was the best pacer outside the guys who went to the WC in 23.

I've watched a bit of him bowl, and I'm not convinced. There's a long line of guys who should be considered for the ODI side - not that we play much of that anymore - and Smith, Foulkes, O'Rourke, Sears, Shipley, Duffy etc are all ahead of him.
