Didn’t watch the game, but based on the last few years it seems like Kieran Read is the guy who is remarkably good given he’s past his physical prime and wouldn’t have played cricket seriously for about 16 or 17 years. He looks a bit ungainly to me but the results are there. By all accounts he was maybe the most highly touted of all of them coming through the grades.

The way Read handled Bond last year was impressive. He seems to be OK against Vettori and McCullum's spin too, deft little late cuts. I reckon he must put in quite a bit of time in the nets for it.

I'm surprised Leon MacDonald hasn't featured for Team Rugby over the years. He was a quality under 19 player. Pretty sure he was named in the tournament team featuring the Marshall's and Oram. Played some Hawke Cup cricket after his rugby playing career ended.

Yeah, was in the Under 19 side that missed out on going to the WC because of Covid. I guess with his dad rugby was probably odds on to get him.

I was looking at where the next ICC u19 world cup is going to be (as interested if it will be in Asia, or a seam friendly host), and I noticed that NZ are not an automatic qualifier this time. Eleven teams qualified automatically , the hosts plus another 10 (assume based on performance on the 2022 edition). I was guessing we did so badly last time, we need to qualify, which is very plausible. But actually we didn't turn up because of covid travel problems.

So, shock and horror for David White. he will have to actually accommodate some games for our U19s outside of the WC tournament. But, it will fit with his policy of not paying anything, only scheduling our U19s in ICC-funded matches (unless a certain relative is in the squad).

Chris Cairns has some thoughts on the batting line up for the WC. Essentially, thinks the Black Caps should have Allen and either Guptill or Mitchell opening with Conway at 3. The rationale being to have two big hitters opening. I actually think Mitchell might be better suited opening than batting 4-6, but Conway does so well there he should stay put. Wants Boult back for that event and doesn't really rate Duffy.

So what do we think will be the first XI for the Mount? I feel like they'll meme 4 seamers and completely discard Ajax and Ish, and play Bracewell as the token spin option.

Not the side I choose, but knowing Steady we'll see something like:

1. Latham
2. Conway
3. Williamson
4. Nicholls (ugh)
5. Mitchell
6. Blundell+
7. Bracewell
8. Jamieson
9. Southee
10. Henry
11. Wagner

Personally, wouldn't mind:
1. Latham
2. Conway
3. Williamson
4. Young
5. Mitchell
6. Phillips
7. Blundell+
8. Jamieson/Henry
9. Wagner/Henry
10. Southee
11. Patel/Sodhi

Felt like Henry bowled well in Pakistan, better than figures suggested, but Jamieson is overall the better option and Wagner should get a farewell, plus has the left arm point of difference. We should be including specialist spinners at home, and the incumbent should be Patel but Sodhi seemed to turn a corner in Pakistan. Last time we played a pink ball test at home Astle did alright too. Phillips and Mitchell can roll their arms over as the part time/golden arm options.

I was about to say this in the other thread but I'll say it here. Guptill shouldn't even be considered for a second for the World Cup, as a squad member or otherwise.

For a start, he's in poor form in the BBL. 164 runs at 16.4 in 10 innings - good enough to be 10th in the averages. Oh yeah, I should point out that's 10th in his team (Renegades).

Secondly, and most importantly for me, he chose not to fight for his spot. Someone in the other thread I think said 'good on him' or something for being dropped and choosing T20 cash over trying to get back in. Not me. He took an NZ contract at the start of the summer, was happy to play for NZ at that time, but then decided to hand it in at the first sign of being dropped and on the outer. Not 'I'll fight back, I've made a career of runs for NZ and I want to play in the World Cup'. His World Cup record is poor (save for the Windies double hundred, he's never fired a shot in a meaningful game) and if he doesn't have the burning desire to make up for that, and 2019 - which he's exhibited - then no interest here in him being considered.

That's even before getting to thirdly, which involves the morals of making Player X the expert columnist in the national paper and the bemusing stuff he wrote. Talking about 'going hell for leather' with Guptill at the top - ignoring the fact he never starts quickly - and dropping Conway down one when he's in prime form as an opener, ha no thanks.

Phillips 100% deserves another shot in red ball imo. Would love to see him in there.

Think someone suggested it in here but wonder if Wagner will make the Bay Oval game his last one?
