if red ball was valued ajaz would have sodhis contract
The subtext here must be “red ball gets the highest weightage BUT we also have to factor in that it’s a T20 WC year”. And they’ve always liked Sodhi.

One guy who would probably disagree with the above reading is Seifert who also missed out. Guess the advance of Phillips plus Conway’s wicketkeeping skills not being significantly worse than his means he’ll be relegated to squad member for a while.

I see that if we beat England in the series we will be no 1 at the start of the final. Obviously winning the final is most important, but it would be nice to go as no 1.

As much as I rate Daryl Mitchell, I could get behind this. Having a spinner gives us more value than another medium pacer, and filling that wonky opening slot is also a great bonus.

Will Young could be replaced by Mitchell if needed. I'm not fully sure he'll end up being a significantly better bat than Mitchell anyway.
I don't have any confidence that Young will be a success at international level. Mitchell has a fair bit of those qualities that, in my opinion, make it more likely that he'll grind out some effective runs despite those runs not looking as fluid as some.

Why are there doubts about Will Young? I think he's one of the better technically equipped batsman coming out of New Zealand this century. If not for injuries he'd have probably played close to 30, test matches now.

Why do you guys think he's not going to do well at international level?

Like I can't say he's looked convincing so far in internationals, he's had his moments, but someone that has been talked about on here for years and smacked Starc, Cummins, etc. around in Australia is someone worth giving an extended run to.

Second century as opener for Young in the county championship. It’s been rocks and diamonds for him at Durham - 24, 0, 1, 21, 124, 5, 103. Again, don’t think opening against Anderson and co. in the first half of the English summer will end well for him but glad he’s got some match practice at least.

That's real good from Young. Two hundreds in the early England summer is outstanding. He took the risk and it's paid off. He's primed now to be in the starting xi but how can he be included ahead of Conway? Strange things happen in cricket. While the focus will be on Kane and Devon someone like Young may end up as the surprise pick, you never know.

no one is advocating for Conway to bat higher than 4 so clearly they're not competing for the same spot

If Ross is not ready then yes both can play otherwise only one of Young or Devon can be included.

Young, Latham, Kane, Ross, Nicholls, Devon, BJ and the four bowlers. That'll still leave a bowler short.

i haaaaate the idea of either opening. its a waste of their talents with latham, rachin and blundell around.

post wtc final when watling and potentially taylor + cdg retire there will be room for both i think

Solid for Young, though he’s been comfortably outplayed by his opening partner Alex Lees. Would play Conway ahead of him, but it can’t be denied that a month of competitive county cricket is worth a whole lot more than a couple weeks on winter practice wickets and 2 weeks in managed isolation, so I dunno.

Yes I'm liking the idea of just letting Young open tbh. Archer has been getting the ideal delivery warmed up in his county spells.

No need to worry about Archer’s inswinger - he’s out of the tests with an elbow injury. Though I tend to think that Broad will be looking forward to taking the new ball against someone like Young.

I really don't like the idea of Conway starting his career as an opener in England. We know two things pretty much for sure about him:

1. He's a gun bat
2. It's very possible for him to be mismanaged to the point of gross underperformance.

Being shuffled all over the batting order early in his SA franchise career was often cited as a reason for his failures, so I wouldn't want to repeat it in Test cricket. I would've been okay with him debuting there at home back when Young debuted, but England is a very tough spot to open in so I just see danger signs all around it.
