I really resent my situation being brought up, because it has actually nothing to do with my anger at the decision made to fast track Devin Conway's application in front of others. Why? because we were unable to even apply to have an application started. None of this affected us because we have never even been given the ability to apply, and likely won't this year.

I sweated my balls off in full four point PPE on the front lines in an emergency department all through lockdown,. I've performed COVID tests on 100s of people . I've performed CPR in full 4 point PPE a few times and trust me that is not ****ing fun. I have at least 5 colleagues in the emergency department who's partners and small children have been locked out of the country for over a year, again most of the unable to even apply for an exemption. I work in the hospital where the first COVID death in NZ happened.

In this context I didn't and still don't think it's unreasonable for me to have suggested that healthy people should wait a few weeks in an Indian hotel rather than have a charter flight to NZ in full lockdown. I don't think that's callous, I don't think that's unfair. And I certainly don't think that's hypocritical.

I know the impact of this pandemic. In some respects I feel lucky to have had full employment over this period. In other respects I feel seriously betrayed by the people in power in INZ.

I wasn't talking directly to them - obviously I wouldn't say something like that directly to a person. Flem on the other had was talking directly to me.

Chartering a flight back at that time vs waiting a few weeks? I would take the waiting a few weeks. I think that would be the better policy both for them and for the NZ government.

If, for example, they were sick, or had a relative back home who was dying? Then yes, obviously important to get them home ASAP.

Really the post was addressing what was the best thing to do in that situation. I was not dismissing their feelings, because again I wasn't talking directly to them, was I?

And also, there's a difference between waiting a few weeks to get into the country vs literally not even being allowed to apply for permission to enter, and then having no timeframe after more than a year until you can even apply to enter.
Their state of health is irrelevant, it's a global pandemic, things could happen extremely quickly and the government's responsibility is towards citizens not "the taxpayer". We know from the government's policies towards citizens in India right now that waiting a few weeks isn't a guarantee you'd be let back in again either.

This is such a sickening sentence. I don't even
It's a fact otherwise he wouldn't have been granted residency.

Whether you like it or not it didn't matter. Residency is all about qualification and they've got it.

What's so sickening about his qualification for residency? They earn enough, millions get joy out of his performances including I'm hoping you too.

Bit of a dissent about Conway given a residency.

There's bound to be some noises but I don't quite understand why. One of the best qualified to live in our country. It's a no brainer really. Fair enough there are other opinions but doesn't stand good ground to be honest.
Can see how it would be frustrating for the family mentioned in the article, but I’m glad Conway and his family got residence. He’d been waiting forever as well.

The whole system seems to be a complete cluster, I have a workmate which got his in about three months, and he has friends who applied at the same time and have been waiting years. It needs a total overhaul (like the DHBs got today!)

Totally... There seems to be no reasonable logic for processing residency. Rather than vent out at deserving Conway if they focused on something to make the whole residency process efficient for everyone that'd be better. I get it when you drop a famous person's name the readability goes up but it also damages a good bloke's reputation.

Not fair to pick on Conway for our immigration's lack. He's also been in the country for the last 4 years, made lots of sacrifices and never really complained. He's quietly gone about his work.

Yep I felt a bit sick for his wife reading that ... she's not a public figure, she doesn't deserve to have her immigration details splashed across news websites.

I mean, the author of the opinion piece quite clearly isn't having a go at her, but at the process that saw her getting pushed to the front of the queue. And that's a fair question to ask: why has her residency been fast-tracked, and is INZ being fair to everyone else in doing so?

I mean, even within the small world of cricket, the inconsistency is pretty grating. I wonder how Dean Foxcroft feels hearing that Devon Conway's girlfriend's residency has been fast-tracked while he's been locked out of the country for more than a year, without any indication from INZ about if or when he'll be able to return.

Foxcroft should just do the decent thing and play for Namibia like his brother did

Seriously though, the whole situation just seems like a mess. Consistently inconsistent

It's the fact that your partner can get fast-tracked as long as you have a high enough income and can entertain "millions" of people.

One last comment of mine on this before moving to political thread... Isn't there a business investment option for residency i.e. if you bring in so much money into the country you automatically qualify for residency over others? Isn't putting some people in the skills shortage category non humanitarian as well? When has this world ever been equal? More successful the bloke or an institution is the govt taxes him more. Is that equality? Anyways these debates will never end.

It seems that you're a little naive.

No one can apply for residency. No one has been able to apply for residency for more tha a year. No one can apply for visitor visas, work visas or partnership visas. No one has been able to for more than a year. No one except sports stars and film makers.

People who had applied for these visas years before COVID was even a thing are still waiting for processing after paying hundreds to thousands of dollars in fees.

I haven't read it, don't care enough.

My understanding was Conway's residency status here as a cricketer was actually based on his wife's work residency status.

Her getting permanent residency is actually the political act of her husband getting residency. Isn't this one action being reported as 2 actions? Reporter thinks 2 seperate interfences?

Again, I state I haven't read it.

No, this immigration adviser who wrote the piece is just lamenting that INZ had to go as far as jumping Kim massively up the queue and getting her residency just to get Devon back to NZ safely after the tour. Sort of 'sledgehammer to kill an ant' stuff, he believes.

Kim was the primary applicant on their skilled migrant visa, Devon the partner attached. If Devon had been the primary and Kim just a waitress or something, it seems they would've been nowhere near it. Coming in to fill a job paying $106,080 or more (which Kim didn't) is what really gets you processed swiftly within two or three months.

Just looked at the ICC rankings and apparently Conway is already #4 in the t20I rankings? Crazy how quickly he's climbed the ranks.

Rossco pulled one of his troublesome calf muscles today. If it’s a tear he’s likely to be out of action for 4-6 weeks.
