Even if so, I'd be really hesitant to rush him back in for a few meaningless t20's. We all know he's the best LO bowler in the country. Let's give him the season to recover and make sure he's fit as a fiddle going forwards.

And he can play the IPL to get some miles in the legs, which is quite a few months from now. Things mighttttt just work out. Phew. Perhaps a big bullet dodged here.

Stead about Ravindra:

Wellington’s Rachin Ravindra, 21, was the latest to add his name to the growing list of batting contenders when scoring 144 not out for NZA against West Indies A in Nelson, then taking 6-89 with his left-arm spin.

“He’s an exciting player, probably still finding his feet at first-class level... He’s got a lot of skills that we like and that’s why he’s in our A programme, and we want to see him keep doing well and pushing his claim for future Black Caps selection,” Stead said.

Reading from the above Ravindra is still some distance away but I'd like to think that is for the test team which is all right. I seriously think they will be silly not to pick him for one day cricket. He will be needed for the next one day world cup and best to start building that from now like all other countries do.

When you say pick him for the LO team, in what spot? We have a world class left-arm spinner who is a reasonably reliable bat in that format at 8. If Neesham/CdG are fit, there's really only the opening batting spot. I'm not certain Nicholls is the man for that spot in LOs but it'll be his this summer (albeit for 3 bloody games). And Ravindra isn't getting LO time in the Ford Trophy either with the A stuff. I'd say he's at least 12-18 months away if Nicholls doesn't nail down that opening spot, which still gives him a couple of years ahead of the 2023 World Cup. Of course he can be a squad member, although I don't think he's there yet either. Only played 12 List A games.

And as for Tests, I agree with a post I read that his best place in the Test side might be at 7 as the front-line spinner. And potentially that's why he batted there last week (6 and 8, same thing). Then they can work him up the order through A games, domestic etc as they choose. The only issue there is the public demand for spinners to make hay on days 4 and 5 if he is the sole slow bowler, but that's an issue for them not the side who know what his role is.

He'll make a very good one day opener. Plays all the shots in the book, bowls real good spin and a good value overall. Don't go by the stats out of the 12 one day he has only batted at the top half the times. Rest of the times he's batted at no.8, no.9, no.11 even for NZ A. Then they didn't realize just because he was 18 he can't bat. Once he smashed Lockie, Kyle and Somerville Auckland side they started to bat him at the top. He has played all of 4 games for firebirds, averages over 50 at a strike rate of over 130. Definitely top order batsman and a 5th or 6th bowler. Santner is too good to be replaced as a bowler and Ravindra's batting is way too good to be batting anywhere after no.6

That's all right then, he'll be back after like 8-10 weeks. He will have to build bowling loads after the rest which will take likely 2-4 weeks. That'll be the end of the season and time for IPL :D

It sounds... less bad... but 'partial stress fracture' still contains the words 'stress fracture' which leaves a queasy feeling and the remembrance of repeated injury and frequently dashed hopes. Not celebrating yet.

- signed, an NZ cricket watcher that has seen far too many NZ quick bowlers ruined by stress fractures since the late nineties

It feels like the beginning of the end ...

Yeah if he got it because of his action then he'll need to remodel it, you can't just forget about it once it heals.
That is so hard to do. Something that's been practiced for a very long time and to change that is near impossible. He must have had it before. Loads of bowlers have stress fractures these days particularly fast bowling. Come with the territory. Name one Aussie bowler that hasn't had a stress fracture.

Lot of our bowlers practice on hard artificial turf indoors when growing up and that is not good for the body. I think that is the major reason why in particular the Aussie and NZ bowlers suffer lots of injuries.

Would it be wise for him to get a back surgery or something of the same ilk later down the line? He does have a slight crack in the bone, even if it heals...it could also just exaggerate?

Another concerning thing, this is his second consecutive season ending with another injury. He will be 30 in half a year. Other than his pace, his ability to stay on the park has been his most valued asset. If that's starting to deteriorate, might be time to take a look at Sears next season as well for a confirmed backup. Ideally in a rosey world I'd love for Milne to put all his issues behind and for Lockie to get over this "phase" with minimal damage. Looking unlikely now though due to past NZ pace history.

Whatever it takes!!!
These ****ers just love batting so much. You can literally see them drooling when they talk about being in the zone and batting and scoring runs etc. Poor bowlers.
