Thilan Samaraweera: a victim of black magic?

Following all the excitement of India pulling off a fantastic victory, let's not forget that Samaraweera played one of Sri Lanka's greatest ever individual Test match performances. He was brilliant with the bat.

Home track hero or not, it takes a special kind of batsman to play like he did against India. He now averages more than Brian Lara.
He was terrific. Not many batsmen have the skill to do what he did - adding runs with minimal risk on a wearing track against good spinners while guiding the tailenders alongside him. VVS did it for us (apart from the playing with the tail bit), but luckily he was backed up by better contribution from his teammates.

Sri Lanka are due to tour England next year. How do people see Samaraweera doing? He has been such a run machine since he's returned to the side after being dropped from the 2006 tour. His game has changed as well, so I'm hoping he can improve some away statistics.

Unfortunately for him, the few times he played away he wasn't the same player he is now, and seeing as Sri Lanka don't get opportunities away much, since his comeback he has had no chance to rectify those stats.

He has decent records in New Zealand and West Indies, but averages 4.75 in 4 innings in England and around 20/21in 6 innings in Australia, and has never played in South Africa. I don't expect him to be great in England, but I think he'l have a solid series and make a few scores. Anyone know when SL are ever gonna get a chance in SA?

He played beautifully on the first day of the second test against moving ball where Roach was bowling with plenty of fire. He actually outscored Sangakkara in that passage of time. Samaraweera to average 40 in SAF and ENG test series.

His technique seems well suited to deal with the moving ball, so expecting him to do well in England. Extra bounce may unsettle him a bit more, so not sure how he'll go in SA.

I maintain that Thilan Samaraweera gets unfairly criticized. He has been labelled a flat-track-bully just because he does not get enough opportunities to showcase his talent away from home. Mind you, Sri Lankan pitches are not all flat. I have seen him score in difficult conditions - his innings against India in the third test, for instance, was a very good one.

I hope he does well in England. If he can play a couple of knocks of substance in alien conditions, then no-one can call him a flat-track-bully.

ive always hated this tbh:

Batsman A: Average 50ish
In subcontinent: 62
Outside subcontinent: 38
Verdict: good batsman
Batsman A would be your typical SL great like samarraweera

Batsman B: Average 50ish
In subcontinent: 38ish
Outside subcontinent: 62ish
Verdict: ATG
Batsman B would be ponting who averages 37 in the subcontinent (except bang).

This ofcourse can all change with just one truth!!! Do well in australia. and here i give u batsman C

Average 50ish
subcontinent 60+
outside 37
In australia 59
Verdict: ATG
Sehwag!!

yup, fail everywhere outside the subcontinent except australia and you're an ATG. so basically australia is the only country that matters lol. do well there and you're an ATG.

edit: no hate on sehwag, i love him. just showing a couple of interesting facts...

Sam averaged 50 in the last England tour. Proved that he could play the moving ball too (although ungainly). He will do well against other teams and the stern test will come two years later in SAF. If he plays that series and average 50 with the bat, no questions he'll be one of the best in the era.

miscer - you're aware that "the subcontinent" is not half the world, right?
lols ok i didn't bother looking at the actual stats besides the subcontinent and simply made it half. but really my only point is failing in the subcontinent is ignored and succeeding isn't given as much weight.

Had a discussion with bagapath about this. Probably is like this because of politics and finances. You must have noticed that performances in India do count for a bit more now compared to earlier eras.

I don't think it should anymore, though. The IPL means that most players get enough experience playing on Indian pitches.

He did that! Sorry Mahela, now you'd be at #3 as SL greats of this era.
