Thilan Samaraweera: a victim of black magic?

1. Sangakkara isn't a flat track bully but Jayawardene is but Sangakkara certainly isn't as special as what his made out to be. Out of 80 Tests, only 24 have been played outside the subcontient.
This kills me. Sanga is a better player of pace than spin. That's why he averages low in India despite of all the talk of flat tracks. He has played on tracks where he does not like most. He like fast bouncy pitches. Pietersen is poor is subcontinet, albeit of your flat track talk. At this moment Sangakkara > Pietersen as a test batsman, and most will agree on that.

2. Yes he is. Only Lara & Tendulkar have played both Warne & McGrath in a similar vain to what Pietersen has. Unlike most other batsman that average 50, Pietersen reserves his runs for the better opposition rather then the weaker. Overall Pietersen is a better batsman then anyone from the subcontient barring Tendulkar & Dravid.
Pietersen has flopped in SL and in NZ against good spinners who were in top form (Murali and Vettori respectively). That is good enough for me to demote him a tier down from Tendulkar, Lara and Ponting. And better opposition is relative. For a non-SC team like POMS, it's definitely SC and Australia. For an Aussie, its SC. For a SC player it's ENG, AUS and SAF. For evrybody NZ is a challenge. And for a spinner, best opposition is India and Australia. In Pietersen's case, it's definietly SL. For Hussey it's SAF. These teams had lid on the corresponding batsmen.

3. I said subcontient pitches as a whole were favourable to subcontient batsman because they are all very much similar. Subcontient players play 80% of their career in the subcontient, so obviously their overall records won't be affected by their statistics outside the subcontient. Funny how you didn't argue against the Jaya/Sanga partnership, eh? Exploited or what?
Vice versa is true, isn't it? And haven't you just noticed that Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe put 485 for 3rd wicket in NZ? Why not comment about them (NZ is the worst place for home batsmen)? Or is it selective amnesia?

Pietersen is far better then Sangakkara. Pietersen plays in less friendly conditions, in a weaker team and regulary scores more 100's then what Sangakkara does.

Pietersen has been noticably poor in the current Test series between the West Indies & England. The Windies have a fairly poor bowling attack, right? But the only Test that England struggled in, Pietersen made runs and the rest of the Tests have been draws where Pietersen has performed poorly.

You'll find that with Pietersen, when the rest of the team is struggling, Pietersen makes runs but when the team is in a fairly dominant position he isn't as prolific.

Pietersen may not of performed as substancially against Sri Lanka & New Zealand but he sure as hell played Shane Warne with ease during the 2005 Ashes series. When Warne was at his very best aswell.

You mean this match?

...Against Sri Lanka, when they were more then less still a minnow. Here are the bowlers from that partnership you are talking about.

RJ Ratnayake (17 matches, 56 wickets @ 34.05)
GF Labrooy (7 matches, 18 wickets @ 55.16)
CPH Ramanayake (5 matches, 10 wickets @ 55.70)
KPJ Warnaweera (3 matches, 4 wickets @ 51.25)
A Ranatunga (28 matches, 13 wickets @ 57.84)
EAR de Silva (19 matches, 4 wickets @ 195.00)
PA de Silva (8 matches, 3 wickets @ 64.33)
AP Gurusinha (11 matches, 7 wickets @ 26.85)

Honestly, I don't know where you are coming from with these comments. You've seriously got some problems if you think that these bowlers have anything on Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini and Andre Nel.

So you just forgot to see the NZ first innigs? Those "crap" bowlers sent the same NZ batting order packing for 174?

No, but when there is 1 frontline bowler averaging 34 and the rest are averaging over 50 then there is a good chance that a huge total is going to be scored, regardless of the conditions.

In those 24 matches, he's scored just under 2,000 runs at 48.1. It's lower than his career average, but it's still pretty damn good, especially as you generally expect a player's away average to be a bit lower than his home average.

On the other hand, if you take a look at Pietersen on the 'friendly batting tracks' in the subcontinent, he's only made 692 runs at 34.6. Hey, here's an idea...maybe batsmen are simply better when they're playing in conditions that are similar to those that they're used to.

Following all the excitement of India pulling off a fantastic victory, let's not forget that Samaraweera played one of Sri Lanka's greatest ever individual Test match performances. He was brilliant with the bat.

Home track hero or not, it takes a special kind of batsman to play like he did against India. He now averages more than Brian Lara.
