Worcestershire vs Cricketweb Red (CC Div2)
The lineup for the match. I felt this was our strongest lineup without our internationals, with Sean, Tharmi, Jamee and Karthik all given a chance to shine.
We lost the toss and were put in to bowl first, and the bowling scorecard shows the story perfectly - the 3 specialist pacemen all struggled. Tharmi stepped up big time in one of his few appearances and managed a game-turning 6/73, a truly stellar performance which saved everyone's asses. Golden boy Nayak and poster boy Borcich failed to take any wickets.
The batting scorecard was, for the most part, disappointing. Iyer was very solid, whilst Robbins and Bennett looked to have their eye in before throwing their wickets away. The real story of the day was a magnificent 80 run 10th wicket partnership between Borcich (54*) and Kennett (29). Not only did this give our score some sort of respectability, it meant we could avoid the shame of following on.
The second innings bowling effort was much better, Bennett with a brilliant 4/30, Tharmi with a decisive 3/47 and Borcich finally able to get 2 wickets. Dismissing Worcestershire for 229 meant we had to chase 348 for victory in just over a day - which, despite our 1st innings effort, seemed a reasonable target.
The chase was largely disappointing except for Bennett's 98 and Stedman's 54. Iyer, Dobson and Gray were extremely disappointing, and Nayak certainly could have contributed more. Another mover and shaker was Nicky Borcich, who, in spite of bowling terribly recently, managed to continue his fine batting form with 37. In the end, we fell short of the target by 68 runs.
The final scorecard was somewhat disappointing, however we did well without our internationals.
3 points - Tharmi Logathanan (6 & 19, 6/73 & 3/47)
Tharmi was terrific, he has secured a spot in the team's next fixture with this outstanding bowling performance.
2 points - Sean Bennett (20 & 98, 0/33 & 4/30)
Sean also ensured another cap for CW Red with a very solid all round effort. His 4/30 in the 2nd innings was enough to keep us in the game, and his 98 was almost enough to win the game.
1 point - Nick Borcich (54* & 37, 0/42 & 2/68)
Although his bowling was, to say the least, dismal - his batting was great. It's fair to say without Nick and his two fine innings, we may have followed on and suffered great embarassment. Well done, but the bowling must improve.
