He's since gone past John Dyson (26.64) and his 90 yesterday puts him above Joe Darling (28.56). Next up to overtake is Monty Noble (30.26) and Graeme Wood (31.83)

Was a primary bowler though, whereas Molehill is looking at bats. IIRC only thing in Gregory's favour is that he was reputedly a very good fielder?

Mailey said that his last series was basically as a board captain due to the players' withdrawal and described him as a 'likeable but amazingly weak character'.

Syd Gregory seems to have been the best cover point of his time "with a return like a flash of lightning" (Pelham Warner). Ahead of Jessop and Hobbs.

General fielding standards during the so-called Golden Age were poor, especially in England, but there were some outstanding individuals.

I think this was their first Test together, Nov 2017, so 6+ years to play 26 tests together

I'm almost more surprised about the 4 they're about to go past who would always have had at least one other seamer in their 11.

Interesting stat though, surprised it's as low as it is. But like you say, not easy for 4 bowlers to always be fit at the same time. And 26 Tests suggests they haven't very often either.
