The Points Table/Standings

A team can even qualify with just 3 wins in extreme scenario. And a team can also fail to qualify with 7 wins in the other extreme.

Australia vs Srilanka match on Monday is a virtual knock-out match so early in the tournament since 7/9 wins is required to make the semis without NRR and 6 wins with a superior NRR. I don't think either of the teams can come back from a 3-0 loss to make the semis winning the rest of the 6 games and also upping their NRR.
Agree except it was 6/9 wins, or 5 with superior NRR, based on the 2019 tournament standings posted earlier: https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc-cricket-world-cup-2019-1144415/points-table-standings. Washouts that tournament a confounding factor, but I still think you're a pretty sure bet to make the semis with just the 6 wins - not NRR dependent.

But yeah your chances are tiny if you're 0/3 at the beginning of the tournament, so agree the loser of that match is all-but out. Current troubles notwithstanding, Australia will beat Sri Lanka fairly easily imo.

I reckon 15 teams with 3 pools of 5. Top 2 in each pool progress to Super 6. In Super 6 no points are carried through, so the 2 qualifiers from each pool play again.
Top 2 after Super 6 play the final.

30 pool games
15 Super 6 games.
1 final.

46 matches.

9 teams play 4 matches; 4 play 9 matches; the 2 finalists play 10.
ICC might like this as you could reliably get TWO India-Pakistan fixtures per tournament by putting them in the same group.

Presumable that would require a lot of washouts or ties
Say the bottom 7 teams lose all games to top 3. Amongst themselves, bottom 7 each win 3 and lose 3. All 7 are tied at 6 points each. One with best NRR qualifies for 4th semi final spot.

In other extreme scenario, top 5 win all games against bottom 5. Among themselves, top 5 each win 2 and lose 2. Top 5 are all tired at 14 points each. One with poorest NRR fails to make it to semis.

Every game is a tie except for one.
They'd have to be washouts/no results. There are no ties any more.

All ties (even in pool play) will have super overs which are repeated until there is a result. I don't know if different players have to be used in repeated super overs but it would be hilarious watching wicketkeepers bowling to no 11 bunnies in a super over.

If you look at that table closer, West Indies has 2 wins while we have Netherlands instead now who are probably going to end with no wins too. So, move that 2 wins to the guys at 4 and 5 and you will have 3 teams with 6 wins competing for 3rd and 4th position which will be the likely scenario in this world cup.

I dunno man, could see Netherlands pushing the weaker sides like Sri Lanka and Australia

I am gonna say that we deserve this as much as Sikander Raza and his Zimbabwean teammates deserved this.
We lost fair and square
Agreed. Sikander Raza is one guy I badly miss in this tournament. Wish this was a 12 team tourney with Windies and Zimbabwe added.
