The one player you want to play for your country

Surely a depleted Gilchrist is leagues better than anyone in England. There shouldn't be a maybe there tbh.
Maybe if you could chose them with their results impacting in retrospect. Why would you pick him now though when there are (arguably) better and younger options available?

Surely Pakistan would want a top flight opening batsman?
Pakistani batting line-up has rarely been stronger then it is right now. With the right team selection (bring in Asim Kamal, will you!), a very good balance can be struck.

It is the bowling which is more problematic. With Gul and Akhtar being injured as often as they are, Pakistan bowling line-up is effectively reduced to Asif, Kaneria and bits-and-pieces bowlers. The inclusion of Muralitharan will relieve the pressure of Kaneria as the stock-bowler, allow him to attack freely; it will also allow us to play a batting all-rounder if we want to, not to mention Muralitharan's ability to cleave through most batting line-ups like a scythe is in itself fairly handy. :p

Hafeez
(X)Malik?
Younis
Yousuf
Inzy
Kamal
Razzaq
Akmal
Murali
Asif
Shoaib (if he is injured than Kaneria/Gul)

is a very very good combination IMO.

For England

It would have been Gilchrist a few years ago, and maybe still is.
If we're going keeper/bats - Sangakkara IMO.

Bat him in the middle order alongside the current blokes and move Fred to 7 (with the 5 man attack) or 8 (if a 4 man attack can be relied on)

Except I'm not sure that Sanga is even the #1 keeper for his own country. And Sanga at 8??

I don't think there are better options in England right now though. Adam Gilchrist is certainly still a potent force in ODI cricket and I certainly can't think of a better English option there. And he showed that even though he's fading in Tests, he's capable of hitting a near-Viv-esque ton.

Makhaya Ntini for the West Indies. A superb bowler and the epitome of fitness. Both things that the West Indies team needs. The batting looks in pretty decent shape for the most part. Once Lara goes, that'll change though.

I'd be interested to see how Ponting would go in a team like the West Indies though.

Batsman are by their very nature unstable. That is to say, almost all batsmen I can think of fail more often than they succeed. We shouldn't be so worried about finding a "stable" batsman so much as one with talent. Strauss undoubtedly has that, and you would hope that in any given game it would be likely that one out of him and Hafeez would fire.

Haha, why Strauss of all people? Not Hayden? Not Gayle? Not Fleming?
Doesn't seem that crazy to pick Strauss over those players. Hayden's getting a bit long in the tooth, and Fleming and Gayle are a bit down on big innings by comparison to Strauss, who's got 10 centuries in 36 tests and has a 40+ average, and no cashing in at the expense of minnows. Yeah, he had a rough Ashes, but he was a tad down on luck as well. Smith might have been a good pick though, in spite of his recent slump.

Myself, I'll be predictable and go for Murali. Instant solution to our spin problems, though he'd have to bowl a lot better here than he has in the past. :)

For me KP and FRED to play for aus coz they are being wasted in england by stacking them up with all the pressure in the world.

England need another good all rounder. Just when the bowling attack picks up, the batting collpases. And as soon as the batting gets good again, the bowlers lose it. England need a consistent player of both bowling and batting, and also, soeone who is decent in the field. And Im not talking about any old Freddie Flintoff, we need new blood, a cricketer who is young and has a good 12-13 years in him. I think its obvious who we need.

England need Samit Patel.

Or failing that, I would like to see Jacques Kallis.
