So Lets take a look at whats lined up for each nation before the 1st World Test Championship Final in Jun 2021. This is just all Tests starting from Jan 2018 for each nation as per the document the ICC published
First off, the lesser nations
Afghanistan:
1 Test vs India (concluded)
1 Test vs Ireland (Feb/Mar 2019)
1 Test vs Zimbabwe (Aug 2019)
1 Test vs Bangladesh (Oct 2019)
1 Test vs West Indies (Nov/Dec 2019)
1 Test vs Ireland (Mar 2020)
1 Test vs Australia (Nov 2020)
1 Test vs Ireland (Jan 2021)
2 Tests vs Zimbabwe (Feb/Mar 2021)
So 10 Tests in total - 3 against Ireland, 3 against Zimbabwe, 1 apiece against WI, BD, Ind and Aus. Afghanistan don't play SL, SA, Pak, Eng or NZ at all.
Ireland:
1 Test vs Pakistan (concluded)
1 Test vs Afghanistan (Feb/Mar 2019)
1 Test vs England (Jul 2019)
1 Test vs Sri Lanka (Feb 2020)
1 Test vs Afghanistan (Mar 2020)
1 Test vs Zimbabwe (Apr 2020)
1 Test vs Bangladesh (Jun 2020)
1 Test vs Afghanistan (Jan 2021)
So a lighter schedule than Afghanistan - just 8 Tests, 3 of which are against Afghanistan. Ireland don't play India, Australia, WI, NZ or SA.
Zimbabwe:
No Tests in 2018
3 Tests vs Bangladesh (Jan/Feb 2019)
1 Test vs India (Mar 2019)
1 Test vs Afghanistan (Aug 2019)
1 Test vs West Indies (Oct/Nov 2019)
2 Tests vs Sri Lanka (Jan 2020)
1 Test vs Bangladesh (Mar 2020)
1 Test vs Ireland (Apr 2020)
2 Tests vs Afghanistan (Feb/Mar 2021)
2 Tests vs Pakistan (Apr 2021)
So despite their struggles Zimbabwe have been slated for 14 Tests, and that's without playing any this year. They play Bangladesh 4 times, Afghanistan 3 times, Sri Lanka and Pakistan twice and India, West Indies and Ireland one a piece. No Tests against Aus, Eng, SA and NZ.
Now here is the important part - None of these tours count towards the World Test Championship.
Yea. So these three nations won't even be in contention, and there is no guarantee then that any of these games actually go ahead.
Will review BD / WI / SLs schedule in the next post
