Hosts to look for comeback at Lord's
2nd Test - England v Australia
Lord's Cricket Ground, London
18th-22nd July
We go into the second Test with Australia riding high, 1-0 up and looking to go further. The hosts meanwhile appear to be in some trouble. A lack of specialist batsmen to put up the hundreds is one thing, but the reliance on their sharp pace attack that we saw in the warm-ups melted completely as the tourists put 600 past them. More will be expected at the home of cricket.
England have made one change to their XI, bringing in Smithington-Smythe for Tesnan. The seam bowling allrounder has looked good in the nets and his extra pace should be more suited to the Lord's track. Manwhile, the Australians are expected to be unchanged following their win.
Expected sides:
England: Fertang, Pickup, Moody, Robertson, Wood, Ardley, Deen, Smithington-Smythe, Myheart, Furball, Force
Australia: Burridge, Lewis, Super, Monk, Spark, Loblaw, Haddin, Wayne, Suifdadny, Player, Stephen

Day One
A perfect batting surface met the captains on the first morning. The hosts won the toss, once again chose to bat, and were grateful for the privelidge. Fertang and Pickup made their way at a good pace as none of the 6 Aussie bowlers could get any control. By lunch both opening batsmen were on the cusp of half-centuries and the score had advanced to 105/0.
After the break there was more of the same from Pickup, who merrily advanced towards his hundred, but Fertang was tied down, particularly against Stephen. When Suifdadny returned for his old ball spell the opener faced 8 balls of a nine-ball over without scoring, before a drive went straight to Spark at slip off the ninth. Fertang had made 67 from 210 balls.
With the score on 174/1 England played for tea, and Pickup raised his century shortly after the break. Looking comfortable once more, he and Moody passed 200 and soon their fifty stand. The new ball flew to all parts of the ground as Moody began to open his shoulders - and brought up his own half century from 60 balls - but Burridge came on for a spell in the final hour to have him caught behind. It was scant consolation for the visitors, who had endured a torrid opening day.

The third wicket stand lasted just long enough to push the total past 300 when Suifdadny got the breakthrough, Pickup departing for an excellent 140. Soon after Lewis was brought on and struck twice in his first over to take both Wood and Ardley for ducks. Next, when Deen tried to force the pace by smacking Suifdadny for six, he was out the very same over as he holed out to Loblaw. Suddenly England had lost all comfort at 322/6.
Roberston was still there, and with Smithington-Smythe in support he notched up his half-century. But Lewis hit back as he got one past the #8 to have him out stumped, completing a fine session for the tourists. After the break Lewis removed the threat of Robertson lbw with his first ball of the afternoon session, to which Furball responded with a bludgeoned four. After a dot, a single and four leg byes, Myheart fell lbw for 6, granting Lewis the figures of 5-79.
From 383/9 Lewis missed the chance to end the innings when he could have run Furball out, but fumbled the ball at the non-striker's end. He made after it soon after when Force edged him to slip, and his 6-80 had brought the Aussies back into the match.
Burridge started the visitors' innings by confidentently pulling Myheart to the boundary first ball, but the quick responded by getting Lewis out for 7 in his third over. Burridge on the other hand kept going as he had started and - after Force failed to cope, conceding at seven an over - he had his fifty before tea, from only 42 balls. At the interval the score was 98/1.
He fell for 64 when Myheart induced an edge behind, and the same bowler removed his partner Monk for 40. When he picked up his fourth wicket of Super for 14, his figures reading 4-56, the total had stumbled to 144/4. It was hardly the time or place for Loblaw's 20 off 16 balls, and Myheart accepted the gift of a 5th wicket when he was caught in the deep. 5-57 for Myheart and Australia were in strife.
Unfortunately for England, no other bowlers seemed willing to chip in as Spark and Haddin ttok their partnership to the close, avoiding the follow-on score and reaching stumps 170 behind.
