Warm up Warm up
Following the early cessation of club cricket duties, a friendly was arranged between the Black players not at the international training camp and a Pickford development XI, drawn from up and coming local players but captained by former Black legend Sangrah Bhatia and including former CW ODI fast bowler Broadbent.
The team was (only XI players available)
Fitzsimmons
Jones
Blackman
Langley
Dubb-Lynch
Thompson
Benjamin
Richards
Warwick
Gooljar
Roberts
The development XI won the toss and decided to bat first. They started quite well but Warwick found his groove towards the end of his spell to remove Kauffman and Spector. Roberts then struck to remove Vesawkar. Barnes completed a 50 but wickets were lost regularly, Warwick and Roberts finished with 3 a piece and Pickford Dev XI were bowled out for 187.
Broadbent and Bhatia rolled back the years with superb opening spells, Fitzsimmons, Jones, Blackman and Dubb Lynch were all back in the pavilion early doors. The score at one point 55-4. The support bowlers didn't keep the pressure up however, and Thompson crashed a 33 ball 53. Langley was not much slower taking 121 balls for his 113. They added 84 before Thompson and Benjamin departed in quick succession, 149-6. Richards(83) then joined Langley in adding 115 to take the game away from the Dev XI. Then Warwick came in and hit his own half century to rub it in. 380 all out was the final score, Bhatia with 4-79 the pick of the bowlers
With a lead of 193, Warwick removed both openers cheaply, before a 5th wicket partnership of 119 between Clubshub and Smith gave respectability to the Dev XI. Warwick took 5-69 to clear up the tail and set the blacks 46 to win, Jones the only loss in the chase.
Overall a decent performance, top order perhaps a little shaky, good lower order resilience, the bowling was pleasing.
