The Battle of the Englishmen

Tough one. Boycott is a funny man though I would probably hate him intensely if he was, say, my granddad.
Flintoff a larger than life character, great cricketer, but too laddish for my taste.

And as they say 'If you can't make up your mind, go with the rhubarb'.

You will notice that mostly non English vote for Boycs while English vote for Fred.

LOL!
The English don't feel obliged to vote for a Frenchman.

That may be so - but I didn't know this had suddenly turned into the nice guy awards...

Geoffrey Boycott is the comeback kid! The non-Pom vote is rock-solid & levers out the mighty Fredster 9-7. White roses all round!

Incidentally, the woman Boycott is alleged to have beaten up (Margaret Moore) was never his wife but certainly is a liar & a bankrupt who sort to extort money from Boycott for her silence. I'm no Boycott fan, but there is no way he would have been convicted in a British court, her injuries simply aren't consistent with her story; at worst there's reasonable doubt. I'd recommend "Boycs" by Leo McKinstry as required reading on the incident & Sir Geoffrey generally.

Anyway, next up are two cornerstones of the British cricketing establishment (except one was born in Milan & the other an expat Tyke); the dashing blade & chairman of selectors versus the wily offie & distinguished BBC broadcaster:

Battle of the Englishmen: Round 2, Battle 6

Ted Dexter
62 tests, 4502 runs @ 47.89 (9 centuries, 27 half-centuries), 66 wickets @ 34.93.

vs

Jim Laker
46 tests, 676 runs @ 14.08 (2 half-centuries), 193 wickets @ 21.24 (5 wicket innings: 9, 10 wicket matches: 3)

It's a mis-match as Jim Laker & 19 for 90 & all that spins his way past Lord Ted 9-1.

Next up two certainties for the all-time XI IMHO, but only one to advance...

Battle of the Englishmen: Round 2, Battle 7

Fred Trueman
67 tests, 981 runs @ 13.81, 307 test wickets @ 21.57 (5 wicket innings: 17, 10 wicket matches: 3)

vs

Wally Hammond
85 tests, 7249 test runs @ 58.45 (22 centuries, 24 half-centuries), 83 test wickets @ 37.80 (5 wicket innings: 2)
