The atmosphere in Cricket Chat - Suggestions & Discussion

Why criticise if you're not willing to back it up with any facts or examples? That's just rude.
Mentioned it before, occassionally, in the course of threads over the years. And more to the point, I genuinely forget. Its a judgement built up over the course of time (although prone to variation). Neither was I the first to bring this up, Andre mentioned it earlier in the thread (pages 7 - 9?) which reminded me of it. I still stand by what I said though - but I'm damned if I will go hunting up examples from threads all over CC (past and present). I have neither the time nor the inclination.

Edit/ Although I have been wrong about a couple of instances. The only one I remember atm being the bannage of wdfu_ben for slagging off athlai.

Yeah, agree with this. CW can be very cliquey - this was what I meant when I said, in an earlier thread, that CW had a "small and somewhat cossetted membership". Its not a friendly place, which is why I often have a chuckle at James's join CC blurb on the CW main page; it never has been.
I think it's friendly, for the most part.

When I joined, I found OT to be very intimidating and not so friendly, but CC to be fine. Plenty of poor discussion but nothing intimidating or off-putting. It's the other way round now, if for whatever reason a poster went to OT first they'd find it much more welcoming, I reckon.

Ah well, I must admit I never go in there so I don't know.

Fair enough. It just seemed a little unconstructive is all. It would irritate me if I was a mod but I guess it's none of my business.

It's good that you chose to stick around in spite of all the poor modding and unfriendly atmosphere :p.

Hmm, can definitely see where you're coming from there.

TBH all the good discussions I've had on CC for ages have been in the footy thread.

True that, I suppose. I wouldnt have mentioned, or even remembered to mention it, if Andre had not already commented on it. It could be that I am exaggerating too - cognitive bias would indicate that having formed an initial perception of poor modding I looked to evidence of that over the years, and ignored the good modding that goes on around here. With that caveat in my mind, I still think the overall standard of modding poor, prone, in my mind, to either under-react or over-react and/or be one-sided.

Haha, thanks. Almost left a couple of times, but I love the game, and the standard of discussion here is more clued up and passionate than anything you would find elsewhere on the web. Learned a lot from the good threads and good posters. Worthwhile reasons to stick around, I think. :)

Assuming you mean CW there, and yeah I know what you mean. I was thinking this before, things are always heated in there but it never descends into utter chaos (or at least it won't for the next five and a half months). People disagree, angry words get thrown about here and there, but we move on. Though I guess it's an unfair comparison because of the nature of the thread - tour threads normally find their way back on track here in CC.

Not Terrible
The tour threads involving NZ have been excellent, Pakistan tour being a particular highlight. Members from both nations were great. Have seen a few Aussie tour threads looking a bit unbearable at times though.

And, for all the fact that if improvement can be made we should aim to do so, we should none of us lose sight of that. Cricket Chat, ultimately, has remained given to a higher calibre of discussion than almost anywhere on the WWW. What we regard as poor here would be run-of-the-mill or even good to many forums.

Yeah, tour threads have rather escaped the problem. The good thing about those is that there's always something new to talk about so arguments don't drag on anywhere near as much.

Tour threads are and always have been markedly different from other CC threads. Mostly because they're deliberately designed around long-term, they do - rightly so - have fairly strict stay-on-title-topic regulations enforced. And there's also some "natural" enforcement there as well - the always-something-new-which-is-related-to-talk-about mentioned.

In being topped (called "stickied" these days), tour threads are almost a subforum without being a subforum.

I get the feeling that some of our best (and senior) posters are not very active on CC any more. Can anyone tell me why?

I did a quick check for the last one month for some and here are the number of posts

Boy Brumby : 60
Vic Orthodox : 52
Fredfertang : 52
Voltman : 34
Archie Mac : 24
JBMac : 1

A lot of them are either not posting at all or posting mostly on OT. Can anyone tell why? What's happened to Sean? I see the odd post by him but haven't seen him debating or discussing anything for even a modest time for ages. Surely the staying away from the discussions of some of our finest will affect the standards too.

Some of those doing staff duties seem to have less time to spend as regular posters it would appear or is it just an illusion :-)

I don't know if I'm in the "best" category for CC (or in general, some might say). :p

Various reasons for me:
- work has been pretty busy (and doesn't show any sign of abating)
- I haven't been watching all that much cricket
- I was on holiday for 12 days of February and was only occasionally getting online
- I've been a lot more selective in my thread-reading due to a lack of spare time and - to be frank - so many of the threads in CC bore me to tears at the moment. It might be a cyclical thing, but time will tell on that front.
