The ATG World XI's game

I'm looking forward to seeing what type of pace bowlers people go for to bowl with the 2 spinners. I think we need big spirited/heart bowlers who are just as quick at the end of the day as they are at the start. This favours to name a few Hughes, Gough, Ntini and my man Siddle.

I think we are going to need a McMillan/Watson/Cronje/Ganguly type at 6 most likely in this team. I know they are varying levels of bowling, so it will depend on which bowlers we select.

I would have thought that 2 spinners could easily tie up one end all day between them, or occasionally bowl longer spells at both ends to give the quicks a rest.

That being the case, you could aim for short 5-7 over spells from your quicks with the instructions - "Bowl flat out". Therefore, bowlers like Patrick Patterson or "Big Merv" who could knock a batsman's head off are more likely to better serve a spinning duo than slower workhorses (??)

There is also the consideration that batsman who play spin really well (eg Mohd Azhar) don't like fast bouncers, and batsman who play pace well get baffled by spin (eg Robyn Smith). Contrasting bowlers tend to unsettle a line up of batsmen.

The term workhorse implies that they aren't very good bowlers IMO.

If someone like Patterson can bowl 5-7 overs three times a day at close to full tilt, he's a fine pick but I doubt he can. With the 2 spinners operating, The opening bowlers are going to have to bowl a few spells throughout the day and they'll be needed for a late burst with the new ball. If our number 6 can bowl reasonably, we probably don't need 2 durable bowlers as much.

Heath Streak

Good enough to bat at 8, had to soldier a large bowling load before which he may have to do again here with two spinners.

Javagal Srinath

Decent career figures, having bowled a lot of his career on unhelpful wickets. Not really sure if he's in the next best two quicks, but thought he deserved a vote.

Damien Martyn

Proven class, great to watch, scored runs in the subcontinent as well as in his own locale, having been questioned on ability to play spin coming from Perth.

Mohammad Azharuddin

Classy player, good slipper, reckon he's right for this team. Is VVS in yet? Ah yup, World J XI.

Think McMillan will suit this team perfectly at 6, too.
