The ATG World XI's game

Love the rants for why player X has been overlooked so long. So many cricketers to get through and even a player like Samaweera with his batting average over 50 has barely gained a vote.

Yeah keep this going beyond 16 teams IMO.

20 or 24 maybe the correct number. 24 teams - 8 groups of 3 each - then pre-quarters etc ... how does that sound?
I originally thought 24 would be better, but I think it would just dilute the quality of the simmed matches. 16 teams is a enough for the sim itself surely, we don't want to overload whoever sims the matches. We can continue making teams, of course.

Gayle/Barnes

Robin Smith (how has the judge lasted this long? Cmon guys, quality player)/Jardine

Shakib

Is this the last team?
Robin Smith. Brilliant player of fast bowling with a rock like temperment. Can't play quality spin though to save his life. Big problem.

I'd say 16 is more than enough, this is big enough as it is. I can't imagine the effort going into simming it, not to mention how hard 20 teams would be to follow.

Robin Smith wasn't that bad at facing spin, you are exaggerating. His pedigree against the top fast bowlers of the 80s (so many of whom feature prominently in this) though has to get him in, gun player.

No he wasn't as bad as some make him out to be against spin, obviously he had problems against Warne in '93 but he isn't the only one that happened to. One of the best I've ever seen against top quality pace bowling. Averaged 39 in the sub continent which is perfectly reasonable.

One of the refreshing things about this thread is that the people discussing players aren't going off on an unusual tangent and kicking a stink if their player hasn't been selected.

It's also nice to see discussion between the merits of say a Robin Smith and a Chandrasekhar compared to the usual 20 or so Cricketers who get so much discussion.

We've had a fair few votes so far, but I'm not going to announce the winners until this afternoon, aussie time.

Taylor vs Slater was always going to be difficult. I enjoyed watching Slater more, but when you judge their overall careers, fielding too, Taylor gets the nod.

Aravinda vs. Younis average differs by 10 - the distance is not that big. I think Jardine is probably more suited to number 4 which is Aravinda's best spot so I'm going Khan narrowly at 3.

Hugh Trumble took wickets more regularly to Tony Lock, he gets in.

Gerry Alexander- Turns out rvd wants him in too so I am going for him, standout keeper whose batting had just hit a purple patch when he finished his career by choice. Would have had an exceptional record had he wanted to play on and was a gentleman too.

Quicks
Mohammad Asif- wonderful bowler, would probablyhave ended up a great, but unfortunately a total moron.
James Anderson- a modern master of swing.
Wayne Daniel- didn't have the longest career, but in a different era would have been far more recognised.

I'm all good with three quicks here, maybe we'll get Mushtaq Mohammad in as an excellent fifth bowler.

Wicketkeeper - Gerry Alexander
Pacemen - Jack Gregory, Bart King, Amar Singh

Gives you a side that bats to 11, has a genuine quick in Gregory, plus two others who can move the ball at serious pace. Bart King is probably the best player ever to not play Test cricket.

Alexander was a very good gloveman, and would help keep Jardine in line. The team diplomat, IMO. Jager, you should have gone with him :p

I thought I'd be the only one, I'll change to Alexander now if that's alright, hopefully Nuf has not started tallying votes.

I don't think Bart King should be selected. His Test Career is as good as mine and yours. Clive Rice for instance would have been selected by now if we were including non-Test players.
