... and a W.A. XI

J.Langer
B.Laird (picked ahead of G.Marsh and G.Wood as he did well against the W.I. ATG attack)
K.Hughes (marginally ahead of A.Voges and R.Edwards)
M.Hussey
D,Martyn
M.Marsh (C.Green not quite there)
R.Marsh
B.Yardley (S.MacGill and B.Hogg unlucky)
D.Lillee
G.McKenzie (could easily be B.Reid)
T.Alderman
lol Voges test career makes him overrated I guess, but Kim Hughes was not in his league.

Not excuses. Just wanted to emphasise the depth.

BTW - I could have included 'imports' such as Tony Lock and Bob Simpson but I wanted home grown talent.
If only some other states thought this way.

Simon Katich can take the place of Laird or Hughes. Or M.Marsh. Comfortably better.

Another who obviously never watched Kim Hughes bat but only looks at stats. Voges not fit to tie Kim Hughes boot laces
Another who overrates “stylish” cricketers apparently. Kim Hughes sucked ass. He’s around 90’s Englishmen competent.

Keith Miller batting 7, he averaged over 50 in FC cricket. Would play above Hodge at #6 and then allow Allan Hurst as pace bowler

Also proves Vic never had a World class WK or pace attack lol (except Merv)
Players that should be considered but I didn’t think of are Warwick Armstrong and Lindsay Hassett.

Hassett should replace Hodge if it’s based on test records but Hodge made so many SS runs for Vic. Armstrong is hard to squeeze in with the top 6 avail.

You couldn’t be more wrong.
The bloke only got into tests because of WSC and was literally as skilled as Mike Gatting. How he played 70 tests I’ll never know. One of the worst pure batsmen to play that many. The way everyone is whinging you’d think I was saying Voges is better than Waugh or something, not this bloke.

Kim Hughes made his Test debut before WSC so your first point is wrong. And he was always at least the 2nd best batsman in the side during his playing career and that included playing with ATG's Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell, Allan Border and Doug Walters.

Fact is Australia messed up and scheduled 10 Tests in a row against the mighty 1984 West Indies and as they did, the bowlers targeted the captain and best batsman in the side. His average went from a respectable Ian Chappell like to his career ending 37 that stats people now incorrectly rate his skill at

Also, if he was only as skilled as the hack Mike Gatting, how does he have the best innings of any Aussie not named Bradman 😉

Kim Hughes was a Test batsman but he's not making a WA all-time side

He would only just make the WA side of the early-00s, with the likes of Langer, Martyn, Katich, Hussey even Murray Goodwin would be on a similar level to him

Edit: oh and Chris Rogers. Absolute gun, easily better than Kim Hughes

Yeah Hughes was better than Voges but probably not as good as Katich anyway.

Langer (c)

?????????
R. Marsh (wk)
Lillee

no. 6 spot is the one up for grabs.

Kim Hughes, Mitch Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Voges, Marcus North, Murray Goodwin, Brad Hogg all in the running. I put forward Brad Hogg since I've gone with 4 quicks (because Perth) and he played a lot of his cricket for WA virtually as a batting all-rounder offering a few overs of spin.

Weird how much of WA's batting strength throughout their history is condensed into the 90s and 00s.

Edit: Although keep in mind my knowledge of pre-90s cricket is virtually non-existent

If I was given the task of actually selecting an Australian test XI to play against another nation’s all time XI I think I’d get funky and quiet unconventional tbh

Gilchrist
Ponting
Bradman
Chappell
Harvey
Border
Miller
Warne
Lillee
OReilly
McGrath

Yeah, if we were picking a team from history to save the planet, would we really be limiting ourselves to choosing specialist openers.
