The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Steve Tikolo form Kenya averages 30 with the bat and 25 with the ball in India. And hes beaten them twice with a really weak team already. So i think he'll be the x factor in the lineup vs india

Flower was really good against India VI, felt like a blessing the few times we managed to get him out.
Yeah - He definitely has impressive figures. In just 5 tests.

He is playing as the keeper. In those tests, over 7 innings, he managed just 1 stumping and 5 catches (2 as non keeper). Are his runs enough?

His batting seems inflated by his big hundreds against nobody spinners. When he came up against Harby or Kumble he was pretty ****. Could he have benefited from not outs boosting his average because his team were **** enough to get out before him? Maybe not. He did have a couple of big scores, but I think his 1 stumping and 5 catches in the field is the telling stat. I did not watch these matches, so I can't say if that was due to his bowlers creating no chances or him just being an ordinary keeper.

I swing about a lot on Andy Flower. Sometimes I think he is pretty good. Not today.

Very hard leaving out Gillespie but opted for Wasim for variety. They'll take on

Sehwag
Dravid
Laxman
Tendulkar
Kohli
Pant
Jadeja ew
Ashwin
Kumble
Zaheer
Bumrah
Zaheer? Is that Zaheer Khan the left armer who averages 36 in India with a SR of 70. No thanks.

Consider Javagal Srinath instead. Average of 26.xx and a SR of 55. And brutal pace to go with it.

Just leave out Zaheer and play with one pacer and 3 spinners.

Sehwag
Sidhu
Dravid
Tendulkar
Kohli
Laxman
Dhoni
Jadeja
Ashwin
Kumble
Bumrah

Except for Gavaskar and Kapil in place of Sidhu and Kumble, this is basically India's ATG team.

As long as he's not keeping he's a fine pick
Picked him as a keeper and yeah probably a bad move but i couldn't think of many. Could have gone with DeVilliers who has a good record but again not a specialist keeper or you could just go with Gilchrist whose record i'm sure isn't very good but made two fantastic hundreds both resulting in wins and wins in India do not come by easily.

But Srinath is indisputably world class and provides that extra pace. Same with Shami. So why leave them out? In Kumble, Ashwin and Jadeja, the team would have a strong spin attack who are all very different in styles. 2 quicks in Srinath and Shami with a world class record in India and their extra pace make it a well rounded attack.

I do like Laxman at 3. A free flowing bat instead of doing the salvage operation he did, mighty successfully, for most of his career owing to special circumstances of the team he played in.

Viru, Dravid, Laxman, Sachin, Kohli, Pant, Ravindrasinh Jadeja, Ashwin, Kumble, Srinath, Shami

Srinath was hardly "world class". Apart from Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka (where he would've been behind Streak and Vaas), how many teams would he have made in the 90s? He wouldn't have made NZ or England's 1st choice XI in the 90s, let alone Pakistan, South Africa, Australia, or the Windies.

Surely he would have made NZ and England's

Srinath would be pretty much the first specialist quick picked during most of the 90s had he been a Kiwi. Simon bloody Doull was their genuine attack leader for a while, no way Srinath isn't a far superior bowler

Cairns I can definitely understand, but he was more an allrounder anyway. Nash, no, Doull, hell no, O'Connor, can I have some of whatever you are smoking

Post-90s but O'connor had an exceptional spell in the 2000 series against Aus, had them 5-30 and that was an OP team. One of those super dangerous bowlers when swing was around but otherwise average bowler. Bit of a Jimmy Anderson of his day

Nash was genuinely good. Averaged 28 with the ball and about 22 with the bat but career ruined by injury. Got a 10 fer at Lords.

I still remember Doull getting 7 wickets in an innings and destroying India's highly rated batting. He too had many injuries.

The trouble for NZ in the 90s was atrocious batting. The bowlers (when not injured) were actually pretty decent.

My defining memory of Geoff Allott was him being an absolute beast in the 1999 World Cup. Unfortunately he never really showed that ability at Test level, although all the injuries he had certainly didn't help

Doull really wasn't that good though, had his moments especially on helpful home decks but he was barely more than a medium pace stock bowler by the standards of most attacks of the era
