The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

How strong was SA 90s ODI team ? To have a W/L ratio of 1 against Aus team of late 90s/early 2000 is unbelievable.

I am watching highlights of AUS/SA ODI games on YouTube and in 50% of the games both teams are successfully defending 220 type score.
That 90's SA team had absolute domination on world cricket, they would dominate tournaments like champions but used to choke at crunch situation only,,, had most allrounders down to number ten, pretty tight bowling attack which even used to put attacking players like Tendulkar in his prime into constraints, had many players averaging into high thirties with the best fielding unit by far, they make a case of arguably the best contemporary odi side under Hansie (barring the lack of a world title)

Steve Waugh, Mark Waugh and Bevan carried a lot of this sides. Some great competitive cricket really.

Yeah, at least in ODI cricket, I think Australia became this great side only post WC 1999. Even during and till then, it was always RSA who were #1 in my mind. They did choke often to Australia for some reason but they also won enough back.

sooo he's not really an initial thought for an nz all time odi side, but in a world where you don't get your cake and eat it too tom latham is an option for keeper bat who allows late career mccullum to play as a specialist batsman.

mccullum
guptill
williamson
taylor
crowe
cairns
latham
hadlee
vettori
bond
boult

latham averages mid 30s which is higher than all his competition and while he's no finisher you can slide him around the order. if he's in at the death he's a h4x #8 or #9 to have holding an end and if nz collapse you get a solid test opener who can nurdle the spinners around quite well. it's a pretty decent upgrade over early career mccullum, parore and smith who are better glovemen but not as good at batting.

Was Baz really that good when opening and not keeping in ODIs?

Australia were very good for a lot of the 90s but SA were fantastic. That's why it was so good they kept losing to us whenever it mattered.
Remember losing 3 zip to England in 97 and many more in Asia

Ftr I cant even remember the SA side at the time

late career mccullum is the best odi opener we've ever had. he's no sachin or gilchrist, but he was unstoppable until arguably the goat odi bowler won their rematch in the final.
Yeah, Mccullum knock in 2015 ODI WC SF was one of the greatest 50s in the history of cricket.

Australia constantly lost to England in JAMODI series' after slaughtering them in the tests. Now we just lose both.

WRT India, Dhoni and Yuvraj might look disposable in ODI ATG XI if Pant, Pandya, and KLR keep their performance up over the next 3-4 years? Probably longer than 3-4 years for Pant.

Sachin, Rohit, Kohli, KLR, Pant, Pandya, Kapil, Jadeja, Ashwin, [Shami/Bhuvi/Srinath], Bumrah

Need a better 6th bowler than Crowe, so I'd prefer Astle over McCullum as an opener (matchwinner rather than match setter up). Scores of 80+ from openers win more games than 40 off 30. Turner is NZ's greatest ODI opener and was world class but it was a different game then, while even Ryder as an opening option would be as good as McCullum and offer bowling.

Had Ryder kept it together he would've opened in 2015, McCullum would've batted 5, and Elliott would've watched the semifinal on tv.

90s SA lacked consistent high class batting. Everyone down to 10 could swing the bat but some of their main bats like Cronje, Kirsten and Rhodes averaged well under 40. Kirsten made up for it in the 2000s though
