The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Poor use of meme. 2/10.
You genuinely think anyone ever seriously said that Australia in 99 were lesser favorites than India in 83?

You made this conversation about Australia. TJB was talking about how SL has achieved quite a bit so I posted that table about win/loss ratio in the best period for SL cricket. From there on, you took off on a random tangent.

There never was and probably never will be a lesser favorite than India in 83, maybe SL in 96 a worthy second. India's records in ODIs was strocious before the cup, as far as ODIs go it would have been like Kenya winning the 03 world cup.

I remember in early stages of 96 world cup when SL was yet to play any of the strong sides, Ranatunga made a statement that all the sides will watch from the sides while we lift the world cup. I don't know if that was random bravado, I like to think SL camp had certain sense of self confidence seeing the way they played thoughout the tournament.

Reckon two of the players doing so right now might make an All-time Against Pakistan XI

David Warner - 1084 runs at 108
Virender Sehwag - 1276 runs at 91
Kumar Sangakkara - 2911 runs at 75
Ricky Ponting - 1537 runs at 67
Greg Chappell - 1581 runs at 63
Ken Barrington - 715 runs at 79
Shaun Pollock - 550 runs at 42, 45 wickets at 21
Chris Woakes - 337 runs at 42, 35 wickets at 17
Shane Warne - 90 wickets at 20
James Anderson - 70 wickets at 19
Glenn McGrath - 80 wickets at 22

Sanga hit 3 of his 10 hundreds against Pakistan while keeping wicket so I'm giving him the gloves here

Warner and Sehwag batting together against a Pakistan all-time attack of Imran/Wasim/Waqar would get embarrassed TBH.. but the idea would probably give Pakistan fans of this generation an aneurysm haha.

Herath is a strong contender as well.

Just thinking how far you could go with #batdeep in an ODI XI

Tendulkar
Gilchrist
Richards
Kohli
DeVilliers
Hussey
Shakib
Imran
Pollock
Kapil
Wasim

Let's take it to its extreme:

Tendulkar (5)
Watson (2)
Ponting
Richards (3)
Lara
Kohli
DeVilliers
Dhoni+
Bevan (6)
Symonds (4)
Klusener (1)

Sure, you'll have to pile on 400 each game to have a hope of winning but you all have 6 bowling options.

They could face:

Jayasuriya
Gilchrist+
G Chappell
Kallis
Shakib
Flintoff
Kapil
Pollock
Imran
Hadlee
Marshall

And the third team in this tri series:

Anwar
Warner
Williamson
Sangakkara+
Jones
Hussey
Warne
Holding
Garner
Murali
McGrath

At what point do we start discussing Jos Buttler along with Gilly and Dhoni as a contender for a world ATG ODI XI?

I don’t think he’s played since the World Cup Final so if it wasn’t being discussed then there’s no reason to now. I don’t see him surpassing either.

I don't think he's far off at all. I remember arguing against this with that annoying bloke who joined around the same time as trundler but he turned out to be right about Buttler.

That wasnt why that bloke was a muppet. It was because he said routinely dumb **** like "dhoni hasnt been good since 2006" and was supremely annoying in general.

Whatever it takes!!!
The only caveat against Buttler is longevity. And I typically dont put guys who are still at least in the middle of their careers in these conversations. But as of now, if he were to retire even tomorrow, he is right up there.

Yeah Buttler is an option if you want a lower orders slogger, which frees up the #6 slot for an all rounder.

I don't think he's quite up to Gilly/Dhoni standards just yet though.

Buttler has this ability to hit out of any situation and take the pitch out of the equation. Insane strike rate though of course it's difficult to compare to Dhoni who was a top hitter himself. What made me really rate him was the WC final knock. It was like Inzi's cameo in the 92 semi. If you take that out Stokes/Imran look fools for taking it deep.

Klusener vs Buttler anyone?

Yeah Buttler looked like he was playing on a different pitch to everyone else in that WC final. Stokes got them over the line (well, atleast to the line I suppose), but the buttler knock was the best in the game.
