I'll go ahead and attempt to make an old and bitter XI made up of grumpy, insufferable codgers.

I'm pretty sure I've heard stories of Sangakkara and Hadlee being kinda prickish tbh.
I had vaguely heard that Sanga was a bit of **** in his early days, but I'm quite surprised and disappointed that there's stuff about Hadlee being a bit of a ****.

Bob Willis could open the bowling with Holding. It's hard to imagine such a tough-nosed geezer being a Bob Dylan fanatic.

Yep, Fred Trueman too. That video of him congratulating Lillee on 309 a scallops and then making it all about himself was awful. Fast bowlers are a grumpy lot aren't they?
Bill O'Reilly had a bit of a reputation as well. Not a pacer I know.

That leaves us with the 'keeper.

Alec Stewart?

Never thought of Michael Holding as a grumpy old ****, tbh.
He has had a low tolerance for stupid play for years. Poor captaincy and bowling tactics have always set him off. He spent the better part of a decade ripping G Smiths captaincy to shreds. He's always been right though, and it's good to hear someone calling the plays as they should be.

In the last few years though, he doesn't really commentate as much as complain. I like the insight, but he's definitely a grumpy old man.

Yeah I've heard that with O'Reilly, and that he had some sort of long term feud with Bradman. If my memory's correct, I think Bradman said O'Reilly was the best spinner he'd seen, but a part of me gets the feeling that he said that trying to be the bigger man. Perhaps I'm too pessimistic however.

Nah both of them hated each other. They respected each other's cricketing ability though, and rightly so. Bradman called O'Reilly the best bowler he'd ever played with or against. iirc O'Reilly accused Bradman of getting Grimmett kicked off the Aus team, because Grimmett had implied Bradman got himself dismissed to avoid facing a certain bowler in a SHeffield match.

Yeah it seems natural for them to respect each other as cricketers given how good they were. Seems like a shame though given they had 40 or 50 years after they retired to resolve the conflict, but that's life I guess.

Lot of drama in the 30’s, seems to all have dated back to Catholic vs Protestant.

SF Barnes as well, what an a-hole he was.

Lord Harris too for being a typically racist 19th century aristocrat.

Certainly easier to pick a not-so-nice xi than a nice one. (How have we got this far into this topic and not seen KP mentioned?) Being a top performer in a sport that's so focused on individual performance seems to favour a certain selfish type, no?

For what it's worth, Cook was a complete prick towards Angelo Mathews when England lost to Sri Lanka a few years back, so he's not quite the angel many seem to make him out to be. Michael Carberry might have an opinion about this as well...

And Hadlee, like Glenn Turner before him, viewed himself as a professional in a team of amateurs which led to some inevitable conflicts. His wanting to keep a Man of the Series car rather than put it into the team pool wasn't the most popular act. And anyone who gets so on the wrong side of a charming bloke like Jeremy Coney that they had to relay tactical messages to each other via an intermediary can't really get into a nice-guy xi can he?
