Probably. I don’t generally like playing specialist openers out of position but yeah maybe in this case its warranted.

tbh re Knott I just picked the best keeper available and saw he had a 45 SR which is good enough for me. Watling probably a better shout especially considering his contemporary keepers.

Sorry, should have specified. I definitely meant as a keeper. I don't know how well he'd go with stumpings off more accurate spinners. Still, his batting is underrated imo with lots of hard runs and very little downhill skiing so he's definitely in with a shout here.

There's something in me that would absolutely love watching this purgatory. Compulsive viewing. Think @thierry henry would also find it distinctly enjoyable too. Two teams: ten Goddards and one Jack Russell on each team. Five Test series with timeless Tests. Sign me up.

Nothing to pick up. New analytics aside, a lot of it is intuition. From my perspective when watching the game you get a feel for bowling changes and field placements.

It's like watching basketball, we all get a feel for when to take timeouts, make defensive changes or substitutions. We all watch and see when to make bowling changes or get the feeling to give the bowler one more over. The rest of it, like picking up batsman's tendencies isn't that difficult. Bouncing out Richardson didn't require a cricket degree.

There's also no way to say if any particular move was successful or if another would have borne more fruit.

Its extremely difficult to gauge success unless it's on the back of an abysmal failure. Border in Australia, Imran in Pakistan, Ranatunga (to a lesser extent). Lloyd was somewhat, but all he did was to adapt to the new way of doing things. The same exact philosophy that I try to extol, he just followed the Aussie template, (attacking batsmen, aggressive bowlers and a cordon to take the chances) and push Caribbean unity and to pushback on island politics.

No this is a very superficial take. Once you have already granted a 15/20 percent results difference based on captaincy, you can't now handwave it by saying 'duh, nobody knows who is a good captain or not, maybe Babar Azam is a great captain and we don't know'.

Taylor came on the back of a successful captain and did even better than him. Waugh came later but everyone could tell he wasnt as good as Taylor even tho he won more.

And I can point to the exact results and performances that show the difference between them. And the difference in style and tactical ability.

So probably a few controversial choices?

1 of Smith Hayden and Sehwag is always gonna miss out so rip Sehwag

Gilchrist is a no explanations needed, as is Smith, Kallis, Murali, Steyn and McGrath.

Tendulkar still had over 10k runs, averaged 40+ everywhere (not against everyone though, shoutout to the Kiwis)

I know some people will prefer Ponting, and some will prefer Dravid, but I’d take Sanga normally anyway..

So the final bowler spot. I needed to #batdeep because the other 3 bowlers are fairly useless. So I chose Cummins over Anderson or Rabada. Pollock was initially considered but his bowling in only the 00’s doesn’t measure up.

Good list. The only loose point is Tendulkar. He has a good case, but so do Ponting, Lara, Kohli and Root. I prefer Ponting.
