Gilchrist is a top 5 cricketer IMO

Bradman
Sobers
Gilchrist
Marshall/McGrath
Warne/Murali
Obviously I wasn’t personally taking ODIs into account in my rating (yuck ODIs). But if giving them such weighting this is definitely a decent shout. Personally I wouldn’t have him so high just based on tests obvs.

Line and Length

Cricketer Of The Year
I'm always fascinated by "Best Ever" lists selected by cricketers - especially those selected some time ago. Here are some from the 1984 book "The Book of Cricket Lists".

Jim Laker's Ten Greatest Spin Bowlers (listed in alphabetical order)
Bishen Bedi
Richie Benaud
Bruce Dooland
Lance Gibbs
Clarrie Grimmett
Bill O'Reilly
Hugh Tayfield
Wilfred Rhodes
Derek Underwood
Hedley Verity

Fred Trueman's Ten Greatest Fast Bowlers
Ray Lindwall
Keith Miller
Brian Statham
Les Jackson
Wes Hall
Alan Davidson
Graham McKenzie
Dennis Lillee
Richard Hadlee
Andy Roberts

Sir Len Hutton's Ten Greatest Opening Batsmen
Jack Hobbs
Barry Richards
Herbert Sutcliffe
Sunil Gavaskar
Cyril Washbrook
Glenn Turner
Geoff Boycott
Gordon Greenidge
Andrew Sandham

I could add Derek Randall's (Greatest Fielders), Mike Brearley's (Greatest Slip Catchers), Godfrey Evan's (Greatest wicket-Keepers) as well as others - if there is any interest.

Interest +1

Curious, would’ve expected Laker to have Lock in there. Dooland is a surprise. Sandham is an interesting choice from Hutton. Jackson too for Trueman. Presumably those three are all based on their personal domestic experiences.

+2. Definitely want to see those. I will say all 3 of these lists are very reasonable, with 1/2 a bit quirky opinions.

The skeleton is almost always the same. It's just the filling out that gets complicated.

1. Hobbs
2.
3. Bradman
4. Tendulkar
5.
6. Sobers
7. Gilchrist
8.
9. Marshall
10.
11.
Let me help you out. The names you mentioned are locks. The rest of yours are preferences.

Umm, not sure how I feel about Gilly that high. I possibly agree that the keeper position isn't important enough to ranked as lofty. But the gap and impact he had above others was quite substantive.

But it's also like chosing a NFL guard as a top 5 player. So it's basically the quality of the player vs the impact. And he was a cheat code.

The rest of the list is great.

The 2nd greatest opener of all time ranks Barry Richards behind only Hobbs.
