The 2006 NBA Playoffs thread

How do you know who are the two best teams, by their overall records ? Suns were suppsoed to be the top 3 teams in the west and now getting beaten by a Lakers team that barely made the playoff and add to that Kobe isn't even playing @ his best. And NBA placed the Suns as the no. 2 see in the west and the way they had devised the schedule, Suns and Spurs/Mavs were going to meet in the Western Conf Finals, although Phil Jackson being hte genius he is , has clearly pulled off an upset by almost beating the suns.

The way Spurs are playing right now, Mavs look the better team and I wont be surprised if they beat the spurs. Clippers are pretty good as well and I pick them over the Lakers easily.
That's exactly the point. You DON'T know who the best team is. So the only logical way to do it is go by the regular season record and seed the teams accordingly. After that, RESEED the teams after each round. This ensures that the best teams are given the best matchups, HOPEFULLY leading to the two best teams meeting in the conference finals. I think that's the most fair way to do it.

how can you re-seed the team after each round? based on what? whether they sweep the series or whether they win 4-3? they play only one other team in any one round...how do you re-rank a team based on that?:)

You continue to reseed according to regular season record. So if the Spurs win against the Kings, they will play whoever is the lowest ranked team remaining (based on their regular season record). So instead of playing the Mavs in the second round, they would've probably played the Clippers. Right now, the Lakers have a easier path to the Conference final then either the Mavs or the Spurs. So what reward did the Spurs/Mavs have for their superior record in the regular season?

Lakers deserve to have the easier path. If they go to the next round, it would be by beating the no. 2 seed. Still they are going to face the Clippers who are a very good team and I would say as good as the Suns, if not better.

If the Kings beat the spurs then hey your MAvs might be up against the weakest team in Western Conf. ;)

an injured wade inspires miami into an exceptional 4th quarter and an eventual easy win against the bulls after huffing and puffing for 3 quarters....they defended superbly and took the attack to the opponent's rim and chicago was completely shut out at the end....it's not over yet though....shaq's foul troubles continue and with mourning still not 100% and wade's injury potentially reducing his minutes, they are in for a rough 48 min in chicago....

suns lead 79-60 in phoenix and look like they will take this to a game 6 and maybe beyond....

spurs put it across the kings at s.a but won't find it all that easy to close it out in the arco arena.....bonzi wells continues to be a revelation for sacramento....

Around that number, including the Mavs. And yeah he's a bit player trying to get on the national stage by picking a fight with Kobe. Some of his comments have been down right ridiculous. I liked Kobe's response, which was something to the effect of "he didn't get hugs when he was growing up"!

Kobe handles himself pretty well (well except when he is in Colorado) . :)

Gotta hand it to the Suns. They've fought back brilliantly!
even if they reach the 2nd round, i think they will lose to the clippers....they are a better defensive team than the lakers, they are a bigger team and will have an even bigger inside presence against the smaller suns than the lakers, add to that the fact that they had a really good rest while the lakers are really running the suns ragged....

I'm staying home tomorrow night and I'm going to watch Game 7 no matter what. In my opinion this has been the best series of round one nd its going to be a great finish.

Anyone see Wizards game tonight? What a great clutch three by Arenas to tie it up. I seriously thought the game was going to be over in the 4th qtr but that was an amazing shot. The range he shot it from at the time was unbelievable. I was really upset with him because he missed both his free throws in Overtime with a few seconds left to go. Cleveland lost the ball they foul Arenas, and he misses the free throws that couldve put the game out of reach for Cleveland.

yeah i saw that.....the pressure just got to him....still he is a top player, he will get more chances on the big stage and he will make those shots more often than not...

Game 1 of the Mavs/Spurs series on Sunday. This is what I've been waiting for all year!! I love my Mavs, but I do think the Spurs are better. I would love to be wrong, but I think the Spurs take it in 7. Although, if there was ever a year the Mavs could pull an upset, it would be this year. The Mavs can still score as always, but they're a better defensive team as well. How much better? Well the answer there will determine the outcome of this series.

Well Kobe and the Lakers choked, simple as that. They were leading 3-1, and should've closed out the series. What happened to that Lakers mystique? What happened to the Zen Master? Anyway, kudos to the Suns for coming back like that!
