I have to say, Pietersen playing for his hundred like that was just shameful.
He wasn't playing for his hundred. It's not like the other batsmen were pelting it around, is it? The death bowling was good, runs just weren't in the offing. Levelling allegations like that at him is just another example of people waiting to take a shot at Pietersen whatever chance they get.

Accusing him of not being a team player is ridiculous, he's the only one in recent weeks who's stood up and been counted.

Nah. Take his score out of the card & we look totally buggered as opposed to just almost totally buggered.

Blame Vaughan, Strauss, Collingwood & Flintoff.
Regardles of who didn't score, it was Pietersen's job to finish things off well as he was the batsman in. He only hit one boundary in the last ten and didin't show any signs of trying to accelerate until he got his hundred, despite the fact that they were into the 47th over. Sorry, nothing short of a disgraceful performance at the slog for mine.

IMO the hundred was definitely on his mind, and his celebration only confirmed that. Of course I'm not going to praise Bopara for his innings either, but it doesn't absolve Pietersen from some of the responsibility of this failure, the cause of which he knows best.

and as soon as he lofted that ball to Clarke he immediately just put his bat under his arm and walked off, which meant Mahmood would be on strike, instead of attempting to cross and making it be Nixon.

Having a go at Pietersen is a fairly barmy idea IMO, he looked pretty seriously dehydrated to me anyway, and as soon as he did try and take the attack to them, he got out. Singles are better than getting out if the bowling is good, as it was.

Why do you think so? It was Pietersen and Bopara's responsibility to make sure England accelerated in the last 10 or at least last 5 overs. They failed to do this, and I am only speculating at the reason that this happened with a batsman of KP's caliber. It fits though.

KP was suffering from having batted 40 overs in the heat apparently. Can't blame him for being on his last legs.

Also your claim that your explanation "fits", is just wrong. Pietersen's a team player, never given a hint that he's not. People just assume he isn't because he has this imaginary "larger-than-life" personality.

but you are implying he did it just to get to a hundred. It was quite obvious that Australia tighten up the bowling, and KP couldnt really freak out with the bat given the wickets that had already fallen. As it was ENgland still couldnt bat out the full 50 overs, so its a good job KP played in a more restrained manner, because if he had have gotten out, England might have struggled to get to 225
