I don't want to take too much away from the Reds' victory but its fair to say that the refereeing was poor - theres a reason Stu Dickinson's not part of the referee panel for the RWC and its not because they've forgotten his name. Forward passes/knock ons both ways were missed (although crucially in the build up to both of the Reds' tries, and the last minute penalty), a number of the penalties awarded/not awarded were marginal calls at best (including the one against McCaw in the final few moments), etc. At least Ioane won't be complaining on his twitter this week. ;)

Taking aside the officialdom, I thought the game was really good and had that intensity you'd expect from a test match, with players whom are extremely fit clearly showing the effects of that intensity. The Crusaders will certainly regret Heinz throwing the ball away from about 3 open Crusaders in the first half when if he'd found any of them it would've been a try, certainly a rather defining moment looking back. On the overall scheme of things though, I think the Reds were the better side tonight and had Cooper not missed some fairly regulation penalty attempts they would've really put the Crusaders under pressure to chase the match in the second half. Will have no complaints if theres a repeat in the final in about a month's time!

Just looking at the run in for the teams in contention for top six and semi-final spots:
Reds 58 points...Brumbies (home), Force (away), Chiefs (away)
Blues 54 points...Chiefs (home), Crusaders (away), Highlanders (home)
Stormers 52 points...Rebels (away), Bulls (home), Cheetahs (away)
Crusaders 49 points...bye (default 4 points), Blues (home), Hurricanes (home)
Sharks 47 points...Cheetahs (away), Lions (away), Bulls (away)
Waratahs 46 points...Bulls (away), Highlanders (home), Brumbies (home)
Bulls 45 points...Waratahs (home), Stormers (away), Sharks (home)
Highlanders 44 points...Force (home), Waratahs (away), Blues (away)

Reds should comfortable win at least 2 of their last 3 matches and take top spot. Blues should beat the Chiefs and Highlanders and take out the NZ conference, while the Stormers (even if they happen to lose against the Bulls) will probably have enough points to win the SA conference. Crusaders are essentially already on 53 points and I believe they'll win both their remaining matches but just finish behind the Blues, and take the first "wildcard spot". Sharks with both the Cheetahs and Lions still to play should finish in the second wildcard position since I can't see them beating the Bulls in Pretoria. Waratahs with two wins from their last two games should finish sixth ahead of the Bulls who I tip to lose in Cape Town.

Watching the game, and it's half-time.

This ref is a joke, can't believe how everything is going the Reds way, and he misses all the knock-ons/infringements by them as well as the try which wasn't. The chat between him and McCaw right on half time pretty much said it all.

Why ever happened to neutral refs for Super Rugby?
Kiwi in whinging about ref going against crusaders shocker #1

Been a good game though, tbf.

Delicious irony in Richie McCaw bitching over refereeing not going his way.
Yep.

What an absolute joke, had to happen and right on full time. 2 tries from the Reds when neither were a try (forward pass for the 1st, and the knock-on that lead to the 2nd) along with a penalty count that seemed amount 200 to 1.

Crusaders well and truly played the better rugby in that match, and didn't get what they deserved.

That happens in rugby all the time James. Fmd there was a Super 15 game this year where one side scored four tries to one (4 to 1 ffs!!!) and got beaten.
That was the Reds v Brumbies. give away the penalties and we'll take the points.

Not trying to be a prick but the decisions went both ways tonight, Crusaders were good, Reds were good and a draw would have been a fair result.

Atmoshphere was electric and one of the best I've ever experienced, let's hope we get a repeat at the GF.

Kiwi coach unhappy about losing shocker.

Yes it was marginal at best, but it wasn't the only penalty of the night nor his only **** up of the night. Dickenson was consistently bad both ways IMO - the Crusaders should of had a man in the bin having been warned about infringing in the Red Zone so many times (consequently without punishment due to Coopers poor boot).

Really wish people everywhere would drop the "We was robbed by the ozzie ref" line. (Not aiming at anyone here, just the general public) and appreciate the game for what it was - end to end rugby that was of near test match standard in front of a Full House. I have never experienced a better atmosphere at a game (and that includes the Bledisloe in Sydney with 110,00 people). The rugby was awesome, the skills of Carter and Cooper are breathtaking, Coopers daring and ability to turn complete helplessness into attack is insane...who the hell thinks to throw a no look flick pass while being tackled just outside your own 22?

Haven't caught a replay yet but the faces of everyone in the crowd was just that classic "what the hell just happened" look.

Rather random comment - but props to Voltman if he is reading this - he predicted that Sonny Bill would go well in New Zealand prior to him playing a game here.

Most people I've discussed the game (and that includes mostly New Zealanders) do share that view that Dickinson was poor in his overall referreeing performance; though at the same time I can see the point of view of James and a lot of NZers backing the Crusaders, given the most crucial of his errors went against the Crusaders. I actually wondered if someone was going to bring up the yellow card warning Dickinson issued the Crusaders which he seemed to forget about despite awarding several more breakdown penalties against the Crusaders in the second half. I guess it proves that hes not really up to refereeing a game of such a high standard. (FTR the last AB test match I remember him refereeing he was poor in the All Blacks' favour in the final 10 minutes when Italy were deprived of a penalty try despite a number of AB scrum collapses.)

As for Cooper, he was nothing short of brilliant in getting himself out of seemingly impossible situations; with Beale's form last year in doing similar trickery you can see why the Wallabies fancy their chances of WC victory with that sort of element of surprise.

Glad I watched the Highlanders vs Lions game earlier, second half was really good viewing. Stuffs the Highlanders' chances so the Lions have certainly done the Sharks, Waratahs and Bulls a favour. Bit of a punch-up too, Piutau should get a couple of weeks off for punching and the Lions flanker who flipped him over and could've done some damage on another day should get a much longer suspension.
No surprise that the Lions' flanker, Michael Rhodes, has been suspended for six weeks for what I described above, although interestingly Piutau, despite retaliating, got away without any suspension.

I also wonder what Voltman thinks of the Highlanders' green jerseys this weekend...

Hoping the Cheetah's play the running rugby of recent weeks...think they'll be too quick for the Shorks.

I'm actually fine with it - I understand their reasoning behind it and with so many teams in the Super 15 having blue in their jerseys, it makes sense to be a little different.

Sharks have signed Frédéric Michalak for the rest of the Super 15 and their Currie Cup campaign. Doesn’t make much sense given Lambie is unmovable at 10 and Michalak at centre is a recipe for disaster. And he was pretty crap (when not crocked) when he last played for the Sharks in 2008. Better than Andy Goode I guess but poor signing given the Sharks need centres, not another turnstyle.

They are finding it increasingly hard to put out a side. Lost another big player in Kabamba Floors. Floors is the sixth loose forward the Cheetahs have lost to injury this season, they have also lost 3 locks and been without Bok, Jongi Nokwe all season. Be some effort for them to win this one. Been a top effort regardless, played over 80% of the season without Juan Smith and Heinrich Brussow.

Yeah but the Reds don't have a forward pack either

Think the Sharks will win but at this stage of a tipping comp you gotta try for some upsets.
