note: I do not think Gavaskar is better than Smith

Arguments I could see in his favour - Longevity, opener, Smith’s friendly home batting tracks during his peak. Also has a well balanced record like Smith’s. Scored tons against Hadlee, Imran, Marshall, Roberts, Garner, Holding etc.

If there’s more someone can feel free to chime in, but those are some arguments I would expect to hear.

Arguments I could see in his favour - Longevity, opener, Smith’s friendly home batting tracks during his peak. Also has a well balanced record like Smith’s. Scored tons against Hadlee, Imran, Marshall, Roberts, Garner, Holding etc.

1. Opener? Yes

2. During his peak, Smith was clearly the best in away conditions as well

3. Sunny’s biggest plus is he scored many 100s against great fast bowlers. He scored 10 centuries against them and all of them in a span of 7-8 years.
