Always a challenge managing the transition from one generation to the nextGG’s youth team is frail and with a couple of retirements coming up within the next few weeks, it’s gonna be bleak for those kids.
On the brighter side of things, all the guys who are in the squad have amazing potentials in their respective disciplines...Always a challenge managing the transition from one generation to the next
That's why I try to keep a range of ages in the Dev team. Easier with ZCC, tougher with FHK where I need to prioritise talent over progression. Can't buy Dev specialists off the TM.

Wow, this is gold coming from a veteran of Stumped. I'll bookmark this and follow the option I am more comfortable with. GG's got a good senior team (at least that is what I think.)there are broadly two ways to play this game.
1) Recruit and develop a generation of talented players and ride on their success until they age out, first from Dev and then eventually Senior cricket. Once they are done, use the wealth you've built on the back of their success and invest into recruiting the next generation of stars. This is a bit boom or bust, and requires a bit of flexibility to build teams around the talent you happen to have, with some investment needed into 'role players' to fill the gaps.
2) Use your Dev team to groom players to specifically replace the oldest players in your senior squad. This way you can maintain a consistent system and structure with your playing XI, but the strength of different aspects within it will go up and down as you transition to the newer faces and depending on the quality of player you are able to find for each role. Also require meticulous planning with recruitment and some luck on the TM/Youth Academy to find appropriate replacements in a timely manner.
FHK does option 1) because we're home grown, we have no other choice. ZCC does method 2) with varying degrees of success. I think we're pretty stable at this moment, the last gen of youngsters we brought in have now found their feet, and we've got some decent substitutes for Heshan and Raun coming through. We've gone bat-deep lately with Ahsan and Younis bowling a lot of overs, but we might change back to a more orthodox 5-pronged bowling attack since we've got some good talent coming through the Dev system.
Agree with you. In BT you often see folks build up a great big nest egg and then blow it in sales and unsustainable wages for a season or two so they win big and then implode - that is skilful enough but I think this is a long term game and the skill is to be sustainable to play for 10 years as the gnarled vets of this game do. Balancing your books and playing the game to win things is much more of a challenge than one big blow out fest and then turning up and starting all over againthere are broadly two ways to play this game.

It is certainly a challenge enough to even stay in Div 2 !! I think selling Burger and Kock is not giving up - and starting again, you are sustainable and have other fish in the frying pan- the monies will no doubt be used to buy one better player or into DEV players or squirreled away for such opportunities as and when they become available-I think some of that has to do with how your scouting goes... unless you consistently keep monies in the bank, which is difficult if you are newer to the game. Regions has an impact as well because the chances of you getting into higher paying divisions does make a difference. I've noticed a clear effect of that between TNT and TMOs.
I also just think you sometimes have to cut your losses. If one or two decent/good players are not enough then you need to maybe sell and keep developing for the next decent team. Holding onto better players that are not enough to drag the team up overall means that their cost is a drag and as well as losing their overall value as they get older... hence my selling Burger and Kock. What are they going to add to the team in 2 seasons time and is it sufficient to pay their wage and lose out on their higher value now?
My goals were a bit off track, some might say. A quick review –S33 will challenge this low-ceiling team. Season goals:
- remain in DEV 2.2
- remain in SOD 1.1
- win T20 1.1
This past week has been crazy for T20 cricket.
Hmm. I mean, I'll take 5 points (totally expected it after the first innings?) – but maaaaaan. tbf the conditions could hardly be any friendlier to a slogfest.
