Stuart Broad farewell thread

His t20 stats are sublime
They are excellent.

All I could tell you about Stuart Broad's T20 career is the 6 6s and the loss to the Dutch though - as can't remember much about T20s. Did he play a big role when England won (in 2010 I think) against Australia?

Swann was the key bowler but he bowled well.

He was also our T20 captain for a bit. I can't actually remember how/why that ended

He was one of the pioneers of the slower ball bouncer iirc, that bamboozled a lot of batsmen at the death for a good year or so before they figured out how to spot it (and smash it)

His peak as a white ball bowler was probably 2008-11. Almost completely mutually exclusive with his best years in Tests now I think about it. Probably why they showed more faith in him than most around that time.

I remember him running through SA to win an ODI in the 2008 tour when they had a much better limited overs side than us, and the 2011 world cup game against the same opposition where he was crucial in defending a low score. And yeah I think he played every game of the 2010 world T20 win and never had a bad one.

Anyhow, can't deny watching the highlights just now that there wasn't a tiny tear in the eye seeing Broad take those last two wickets.

Can't be many if any cricketers who've ended their careers with a six and a wicket off their last balls as a batter and bowler respectively.

Broad has been a cracking bowler, especially against us in The Ashes. Personally, I think he went for a series too long and should have retired before this one started, but he still managed to do ok I suppose. Being an Englishman, he is a bit of a knob on the pitch, but he seems like a decent bloke off it. This is obviously some sort of mind trick, as it's not possible that is the case given his origins.

The changes in both teams from this series to the next in Australia will make things pretty interesting in 2 years time. I'm interested to see how Anderson accommodates a zimmer frame in his action in 2025/26.

Say what you like about the guy, he never backed down from a fight, he won four Ashes series and was England's best bowler in three more.

After seeing Johnson in the 8-15 highlights it struck me that he won Australia one Ashes series but lost four, including one where his bowling let England back in (2009).

As a South African fan I have memories of him running through us a few times. What was it? Durban '09 and Joburg '16? I'm a big fan of James Anderson's bowling style but I always had more fear as a fan of Broad getting the bit between his teeth and running through us. Great bowler. Fun batsman. Great career.

Anderson sorta made it as a white ball bowler as well initially, if I am not wrong between 2003-05 and were probably his peak years there too. Maybe there is a story here that seamers mature into great test bowlers post a white ball peak?
