That siad, it was a very good performance by the Lankans to get another bowling record. Sure, any club side could skittle the President's Good Men out quick, but for 135, then 35?
Vaas has established himself as one of the better ODI bowlers of the recent past. However, his performances against the Australians needs improvement. A very accurate bowler, who can be unplayable in helpful conditions, he is a crucial player in this Sri Lankan team.
Good to see Dilhara in form, though he's not as fast as he was in 2001. His accuracy has improved and he was getting some movement. Very similar to Srinath, though I hope he does not run out of gas due to overuse. He needs to stay fit and be more consistent, since he is a good prospect for the future and there is a need to look beyond Murali and Vaas, and especially the Zoysas, Dharmasenas and Chandanas.
Whoever said Maharoof will be a star may be right. A positive, aggressive bowler, he has some pace and was getting good bounce. He makes the batsman play and even if he goes for a few runs, he'll also pick up the odd wicket. He is also supposed to be a good batsman, which will make him a more effective player, especially in ODI's. Disappointing, though, that Herath did not get to bowl, but he can definitely field.
I had suggested Saman JAyantha as an ODI opener, and I knew why. He was successful in an A-team tri-series and was an attacking player, which makes him a useful ODI opener, especially in the team that set the trend for pinch-hitters. He should get an extended run at that position.
The only disappointment in this match has been the form of Russel Arnold. He has been given enough chances, but has failed repeatedly, when needed most. That place could go to a fifth bowler, or a specialist wicketkeeper. Prasanna Jayawardene has a good chance to make the team. He was awarded 'best wicketkeeper' in a national tournament and his batting has improved a lot. There is also the more experienced Lanka De Silva to pick.
The series may be over, but the Lankans can keep all options open and use every single player they have picked. This is the best chance to find some new, emerging talent, to persist with for a few years.
As for the so-called opposition, is this the return of the veterans?
