Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe thread

One person to come out of this with credit is Taibu, of course - a fantastic captain's innings. Shame he didn't bag a hundred.

Oh, and Nkala who did a Chris Read to Murali in the last over.

211-6.

nkala hammers murali for 2 sixes....and we were expecting him to get 9 wickets in the match....tsk tsk
taibu misses out on his century but he played brilliantly

Murali was expensive in the end..10 overs 1/47.

Good knock by Taibu, but had he not played that innings it could well have been a total less than 150.

Panyangara gets a wicket with his 2nd ball. Jayasuriya would have his coach pulling his hair out...sometimes I don't think he treats any bowler with enough respect, hence why he only gets a decent score once every 6 or 7 innings.

Panyangara gets the wicket of Jayasuriya with his second ball in ODI cricket. SL 1/9.

I understand that, following on from the success certain Zimbabwean coaches and administrators have had in international cricket in the past, the ECB are considering finding a position for Robert Mugabe on the selection panel.

Atappatu out lbw to Hondo for a duck! 2/13... there could be more to this game than most people would care to acknowledge.

The news apparently is that Sri Lanka's target has been reduced to 173 from 33 overs, meaning that they will have to score at around 5.4 per over to win. Could be an interesting finish - maybe even an upset win to the Zimbabweans.

This is getting very interesting indeed. I'm surprised that Zoysa has been sent in as a pinch-hitter, seems to indicate a lack of confidence in Dilshan and Arnold. It could go horribly wrong - on the other hand he might smash a quick 50 and all will be well again. Have to wait and see I suppose.

The only white man in the Zimbabwe side gets a duck. I might be talking complete crap, but would not be surprised if the ZCU paid Taylor money to make a duck so that they have an excuse to drop him and play an all black team. After all they offered Mark Vermeulen double his match fee not to play a while ago, just because he is white.

I doubt he was paid to get a duck, but there is a good chance that they will drop him.

Zoysa out for 14, SL 4/77. A lot of pressure on Sangakkara now...

Yes, he is I think. He got 'sacked' from the selection panel though.
I read about this last week, and found it confusing - was this actually one of the demands of the alienated player group? Because that's what the article I read at cricinfo seemed to imply. And if that was the case, why?

81/4 now, and looking fairly dire for the Sri Lankans. Very nasty surprise right at the beginning of the tour.

Light offered to the batsmen and taken. I guess they would be ahead on D/L calculations at 4/144. In fact apparently they have won - by 12 runs. Oh well, at least the Zimbabwe team salvaged their pride, and at one stage threatened an upset win.

zimbabwe should be given some credit after todays performance. nearly everyone wrote them off, but they fought well making 211/6 after being 1/2 and took 2 early wickets, but in the end the zim inexperience and a good innings by sangakkara became the reasons for sri lanka win.

Have you got proof of that?

I missed hearing about it!

I don't know about the full D/L tables, but I wonder if they'd have been ahead had this:

25.5 Hondo to Sangakkara, one run, short out side the off stumps, goesfor a cut, mgets the thick out side edge. Dropped by Maregwedebehind the stumps
been held.

Taibu taking the pads off for a twirl sounds funny in a peverse sort of way!

Not that this is 'proof' as such, but it was alleged in the players' statement:

"Once again, we have been reliably informed (and can be officially verified by that source if necessary) that a Board member suggested during the above selection meeting that Mark Vermuelen be offered "a double match fee, NOT to play" in the ODI that he'd already been selected for and been informed of!! The suggestion was made to try and pave the way for Stuart Matsikanyeri, who had been dropped, to play. It was only after the National Coach and Heath refused to be involved in dealings that would bring the Game of Cricket into disrepute (ICC Code of Conduct), that the suggestion was retracted."

That is probably what he was referring to.

I expect it would have been exceptionally close. Would have come down to whether Chandana's slogging came off.

And why isn't Taibu keeping when he's not bowling?
