South African Domestic Season 2016/17

Another century for Zondo. Has had a very good season, especially considering he averaged only 10 in FC cricket last year! Sure the selectors would like to get him in the mix for the NZ tour but from what I’ve seen of him he doesn’t pass the eye test with regards to international quality.
Think SeamUp rated him higher than Bavuma initially, thought he was most likely to get in the SA team (SeamUp to confirm). Nice to see improvment, but he has to perform at SA 'A' level first I think, the domestic FC structure is not sufficient quality to really judge atm.

Yeah, he has shots off the back foot and front foot & what probably made me say there could more potential is that he can got through the gears far better than Bavuma. But I think Bavuma has a better temperament under pressure and softer hands and better consistency. The odd thing about Zondo is he will look really good like this season and then the next it will look like he can't hit the ball off the square.

I wonder if this is the Dolphins first choice opening partnership by choice now over Khan/Erwee (I know the latter had an injury). I thought it was about time Alexander was left out but Rabian Engelbrecht is just as erratic. Hopefully Savage can get another decent score behind his name and some wickets which will put him in the selection frame for SA 'A' to England.

Found out it was just cramp for Chris Morris in the last game and precautionary.

Hardus Viljoen on the other hand pulled his groin and is out for 6-8 weeks. Only really 2 months left of the domestic season.

Would rather have Zondo play for the Proteas, than that hack, Ramela.

Dwaine Pretorius is putting solid numbers on the board. I could see him become a genuine number 6 who bowls a lot of overs. It's quite interesting that we producing a number of batting Allrounders. Hopefully a guy like Mulder can keep in improving especially with his batting.

Under 19's lost to Zim. Yikes.
But clobbered by more than a hundred runs in the previous game I think.
Very disappointing indeed. The quick bowling seems a disappointment besides Mulder.

Also a bit concerning why Mulder and Makwetu aren't involved again today. I would say with those two, Breetzke and van Tonder they have potentially big futures. Sipamla also but been disappointing. I want to see more from him. De Klerk the spinner also seems alright but the majority of spinners develop late.

You would think Bavuma would be playing for the Lions - needs some runs and there isn't much time before the guy’s head off to NZ. I see Cook is back captaining the side and Maharaj is playing for the Dolphins.

It is surprising that Bavuma is not playing...

Is Markram injured? Just haven`t seen him playing recently? Reason I ask is that I`m not convinced about the T20 squad at the moment. I am happy for us to play and blood new players, but I am thinking is Smuts or Kuhn really a good choice, I don`t see them for SA long term, I understand they had good form, but it would be great to see up and coming future players instead getting international exposure during the T20`s.

It is surprising. Maybe needed time away from the game after being with SA 'A' last winter and will return for the final 2 rounds of Sunfoil Series ?

Very much with the Titans group and opened for them in the 7th round of Sunfoil Series and scored 29 & 53. The 8th round is played over two weeks so everyone bar Dolphins/Lions play this week. Think they just want to get franchise cricket in him and some 4-day cricket particularly instead of rushing him into the T20 squad.

This will be happening more in our game due to changes. Likes of Rusty Theron, Werner Coetsee & others

Daryn Smit has been doing some really good comms work and in studio recently. Always liked the guy and was with the AB, Faf, JP, Philander u19 squad.

Scored a double hundred in last game for Derbyshire 2nd XI

Smit to leave the Dolphins

Veteran Hollywoodbets Dolphins player Daryn Smit has announced his retirement from the Durban based franchise that he has represented throughout his career at the end of the current season.

He plans to return to his English county club Ramsbottom, that he has represented in the last three seasons, in the Lancashire league later in the year.

The 32 year old batsman, wicketkeeper and part time spinner has been a popular member of the franchise side for 14 years, and a senior and leader in the team.

“I have enjoyed a long and committed career with the Dolphins and never seriously considered playing franchise cricket anywhere else other than in Durban and for this team,” said Smit.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given here and have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the franchise. I will see out the rest of my contract with the Dolphins and be committed, as always, to contributing whatever I can in the remaining matches of the season.

“I am proud of my 14 year career. I’ve never been motivated by money and in these modern times it’s quite rare for a cricketer to remain with one team for so long. I’ve seen many players come and go and have forged some lasting friendships with teammates and other people through cricket.

“I’m stepping down and leaving Kingsmead with many good memories and with a smile on my face, which is important for a player to do whenever possible,” said Smit.

“I would like to thank the Dolphins and KZN Cricket Union, especially my teammates, the coaching and support staff and those administrators who have been closely involved with the team,” he added.

“I would also like to thank the players association, SACA, for its great support and for assisting with my education, personal development and preparing me for life beyond cricket.

“Yusuf Wariyawa and Delta Cricket Club, will always hold a special place in my heart for helping me to get where I am today. I also thank Gunn and Moore, Anne Vilas and Opal Sports who have stuck by me and been my equipment sponsors throughout my professional career.

“My wife, Sarah, and I are looking forward to exciting new times in the UK and I hope to continue to play for my club Ramsbottom, in the Lancashire League. At 32 I still have a lot to give to the club so this is by no means the end of my playing career,” he concluded.

Smit said that to him, cricket was more than just a game and there are so many memories that he holds dear to his heart on and off the field.

“Definitely something that cricket has afforded me over the last 15 years was an opportunity to travel, to see different countries, meet different people and experience the world and that is something I would have probably never achieved had I worked an ordinary office job.”

Among other things he is mostly proud of was winning the Ram Slam in 2013/2014, a moment of victory which he says was a very emotional one for him and also making the representatives’ teams – the SA U19, emerging players’ team, South African’s A side as well as being selected for the 2009 T20 World Cup initial squad.

Smit, who made his first-class debut in 2004, has amassed just under 5500 runs in the four-day format with a top score of 156* along with 324 catches and 106 wickets – an example of his impressive dynamism within the side.

His strong glove work and steady leg-spin bowling always offered the Dolphins a variety of options and his commitment to the side in all formats of the game could never be faulted.

Elgar returns for the Titans

The Sunfoil Series log is heavily congested and the pressure will unnerve the fainthearted and people who despise the presence of too much heat in the kitchen.

The team at the summit, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, boast 78.66 points and have played one more match than the second-placed Multiply Titans. The defending champions have 70.76 points. They have a three and a half point-cushion, with the bizhub Highveld Lions on 67.18 points chasing hard, but having contested one more game.

The fifth-placed Warriors, with 65.62 points, are not out of the race with three matches in the home strait awaiting four of the teams.

Henry Davids, the Multiply Titans’ captain, says pressure is not a burden. The Titans have a history of emerging victorious when they are with their collective backs against the wall.

Last season, the Titans stone-walled in the penultimate game of the series against the bizhub Highveld Lions and denied the Highveld team the spoils. In the final game of the season, a sensational Rowan Richards captured 7-40 and the Buildnat Cape Cobras, who needed 135 for a win, lost by 10 runs. That win ensured the Titans the precious four-day title.

The key in the coming three weeks will be to operate at a high intensity and to focus on what they can control, said Davids.

The Titans have erred on occasions by not converting useful scores into spectacular ones, and Davids admits it.

The statistics confirm his constructive criticism.

The Titans have produced three centuries and 13 half-centuries in the four-day showpiece this season, an indication that their gifted top- and middle-order failed to capitalize on good 50’s and 60’s.

The undoubted batsman of the season so far has been the inexperienced Aiden Markram, who averages 87.20 for the Titans in the Sunfoil Series and has struck two sensational tons.

Dean Elgar, one of South Africa’s best batsmen, will return to the Multiply Titans for the remainder of the Sunfoil Series.

Elgar was the recent man of the series against Sri Lanka and was at his prodigious best at PPC Newlands. He scored a century in that clash and was also a standout-figure in South Africa’s sensational come-from-behind victory against Australia in the recent first test at the WACA in Perth.

Elgar boasts a highest first-class score of 268 and was one of the leading centurions last season in which the Titans blasted 12 tons to win the competition.

“I think one of our main assets is the strength in depth that we have in all departments. With Lungi Ngidi out of the equation, Junior Dala is back and he has been bowling very well in practice,” said Davids.

“We are a team who is well aware that our fate and destiny is in our own hands, starting with the Sunfoil Series match against the Buildnat Cape Cobras on Thursday 26th January.

“If we win at least two of our three last games, we should be ok. But we want to be triumphant in all three of our clashes. We are not going to depend on other teams to do us favours,” Davids emphasized.

Omphile Ramela back for the Cobras

It's not only the Proteas who are welcoming back a stalwart this week, but the Cape Cobras too. Fresh from taking a week off for the birth of his first child Omphile Ramela is back at work and ready to take on the Titans at SuperSport Park in Centurion this weekend.

The former Cobras captain is a vital member of the batting unit at the top of the order and his experience will be vital against the defending champions.

Ramela will rejoin a rejuvenated Andrew Puttick, who is pushing towards the 11 000-run first-class landmark, at the expense of Boland batsman Simon Khomari. Former South African U-19 paceman Lizaad Williams also returns to the Cobras squad for his first franchise game of the season with new Proteas T20 cap Dane Paterson still on international duty.

Based on the respective log positions, with the Titans in second place and the Cobras rooted to the bottom, it seems the a foregone conclusion for the home side, but the visitors have shown refreshingly good form since the change of management structure down at Newlands at the end of last year.

The Cobras seem to be playing as a team once more and not a bunch of individuals and it has translated into success on the field in 2017. The Titans would be wary of this renewed spirit, especially as they try and regain the lead at the summit of the log which was lost to the Dolphins last weekend.

The Dolphins currently have 78.66 points in comparison to the Titans’ 70.76, although the latter have a game in hand.

The Hennops River side have a host of players on international duty still this week with Proteas T20 captain Farhaan Behardien, prolific batsman Heino Kuhn and promising new seamer Lungi Ngidi all involved in Wednesday’s T20 against Sri Lanka at Newlands. All-rounder Chris Morris will also be unavailable as he returns to the ODI squad after an injury-enforced absence.

However, such is the vast depth that the Titans have at their disposal, that the loss of the afore-mentioned quartet actually eases coach Mark Boucher’s selection woes. Proteas Test opening batsman Dean Elgar returns to franchise cricket immediately after being named Man of the Series in the recent series against Sri Lanka and will add a considerable amount of experience and quality to the Titans top order.

He will no doubt look to continue the prolific form he showed in the three-match series and also in Australia recently on a pitch that will most likely suit the batsmen. Among the other changes will see promising fast bowler Junior Dala come back into the line-up at the expense of Ngidi.

“I think one of our main assets is the strength in depth that we have in all departments,” said Titans captain Henry Davids. “We are a team who is well aware that our fate and destiny is in our own hands.

“If we win at least two of our three last games, we should be ok. But we want to be triumphant in all three of our clashes. We are not going to depend on other teams to do us favours,” the skipper emphasized.

Wouldn't be surprised if Smit joins a county,as you said Seam Up at Derby 2nds last year.A victim of transformation policy.
