South African Domestic Season 2016/17

Nice to see us getting back to our quality allrounders situation again... felt very unsouthafrican not to have a great allrounder...
Certainly is. Good to see the majority of the best seamers coming through can hold a bat. For each of those ages they are the best bowlers too (add Sipamla (18), Mnyaka (17) to the list)

SA u19s beat Zim pretty comfortably today. Makwetu (129) & Breetzke (98) didn't really let van Tonder and Mulder get a chance to bat. Wickets for Sipamla, Mnyaka, Mulder, de Klerk.

Be good to see what they do v Sri Lanka now.

Chris Morris in the wickets and quite economical. Could be interesting selections coming up.

Mosehle finally becoming a bit more consistent. Big knock now after Lions were in trouble to come in and knock 100 (123)

And in other news, Kimberley is back to being road. Hate FC games like this one. That is my issues with quite a few of the out-grounds ie Paarl, East London, Kimberley, Benoni, PMB and even Potch at times.

Not sure of the playing conditions but all the games were called off today well before tea. Only the Titans game could have produced a result but don't think I've seen games called off that early before. Lions could have at least pushed for the win.

Only moments after this, it looks like he suffered a recurrence of his injury or a new one. Jinxed him.
That's a shame. Not long until the Champions Trophy now and South Africa don't have a XI which you could name.

No real news has come out so hopefully it was just precautionary as he certainly still has something to offer for SA cricket.

I was looking at the ridiculous depth the Lions have with the majority of the recent SA u19 batsman playing for Gauteng and North West and I wonder how much the new franchise will take from other unions. In my opinion they have to basically go shopping and should take a few from them.

Gauteng

Ryan Rickelton
Yaseen Valli
Yassar Cook
Shaylen Pillay
Grant Roelofsen
Farhaan Sayanvala

North West

Janneman Malan
Marques Ackerman

It's really pleasing as a Dolphins fan to see them at the top of the table. Good to see Muthusamy scoring a ton. I played junior level soccer with him.

It's been an odd season so far with weather sometimes playing it's part and none more so than the Dolphins. Next 3 games will decide the champions. Going to be exciting.

Muthusamy does seems to have the right temperament and attitude from what I've noticed. Haven't seen a lot but the longer format is definitely right up his alley. A later developer possibly. Hopefully he keeps getting better.

Think the Dolphins needed local young players like him, Phehlukwayo, Savage and Dupavillon to come through.

SA u19s beat Sri Lanka u19s convincingly on Sunday.

Jesse Christensen with a hundred & the highly regarded Raynard van Tonder with 79. Three wickets each for Mulder and De Klerk.

2018 u19 CWC time the top 4 is set in stone most probably.

1. Breetzke
2. Makwetu
3. Christensen
4. Van Tonder

Why? The Lions aren't short of seam bowlers at the moment are they?
I think it is balance.

They getting Cook back. So trying to balance issues out.

Their main coloured and asian players are Reeza Hendricks, Dominic Hendricks and Bjorn Fortuin. Reeza is away on T20 duty but isn't in good form & Dominic Hendricks always does enough to just survive the team even if captain. Probably strengthens their seamer bowling unit at same time as I think Hardus got injured and besides him Pretorius it isn't their strongest area.

I actually think it will be a good move for him permanently. Same for Keegan Petersen who is on loan at Knights now from Cobras. They just produce too many good 'coloured players' not playing franchise cricket.

Upbeat Dolphins ready for tough run-in

Another impressive batting display from the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in their high-scoring draw against the VKB Knights last week gave them their sixth bonus point in seven games.

That took the Durban franchise to the top of the Sunfoil Series log with three home games to play, starting with a clash with the bizhub Highveld Lions in Pietermaritzburg from Thursday to Sunday.

With a tough assignment ahead of the side they will welcome back Proteas star Keshav Maharaj, whose duties with the national test side have come to an end which will be a boost to the home side at their second home in the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal.

Coach Grant Morgan, however, has been happy with how his charges have fared.

“We have missed out in one bonus point battle this season - to the Titans - so it shows you that we are doing some good things, but we know that things can change quickly and in a flash we can go from first to fourth on the log,” he mentioned on Tuesday.

“Having Kesh back in the mix for the four day competition after contributing well to the Proteas will help him settle in easier.

“And to have him in the side, not only from a bowling point of view, but from an all-round point of view, his batting, his fielding and his leadership will be massive for us.”

Although the Dolphins have gained one of their internationals back they have lost another in the form of Andile Phehlukwayo, who's been given a maiden call up to the Standard Bank Proteas T20 squad for their T20 series against Sri Lanka starting on Friday.

With a handful of allrounders in the side Morgan has had the luxury of playing five seamers in the previous two encounters which has meant that the pressure of bowling large numbers of overs has been quite limited.

“The rational of going in with five seamers is that Sen (Muthusamy) isn’t a front-line spinner yet and he has to open the batting so we are able to protect him a little, and yes the seamers did bowl a lot of overs but they were spread out across five of them which lightens the load a bit.”

Morgan, who is no stranger to the Pietermaritzburg Oval, having been the coach at KZN Inland previously, believes that the ground does not suit either the bowlers or the batsmen but can provide a good, fair contest.

“The batsman looking for an excuse to not make runs won’t make runs and the bowler looking for an excuse that it is a wicket that he doesn’t want to bowl on won’t succeed.

“Conversely, the batter who goes there with a good attitude, there are runs there and there are wickets for all types of bowlers, that’s how I see Maritzburg,” he added.

HOLLYWOODBETS DOLPHINS SQUAD:

Craig Alexander, Cody Chetty, Rabian Engelbrecht, Rob Frylinck, Keshav Maharaj, Sibonelo Makhanya, Senuran Muthusamy, Calvin Savage, Mthokozisi Shezi, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Divan van Wyk, Morné van Wyk (C), Khaya Zondo.

One day Vaughn Van Jaarsveld will look back on his career and wonder how did it go so wrong. He just couldn't step up.

Another century for Zondo. Has had a very good season, especially considering he averaged only 10 in FC cricket last year! Sure the selectors would like to get him in the mix for the NZ tour but from what I’ve seen of him he doesn’t pass the eye test with regards to international quality.

Looked awful when he did step up but I've always been a fan, and he can really take an attack apart on his day. Being a poor player of spin and fitness issues haven't helped him.
