South Africa team selection

It feels strange the whole career path of Gideon Peters. Wonder if he moves provinces? Just hasn't played since the SA20.

They won't be selected now but I've seen enough to say Luus and Boast should be Proteas in time too.
Luus and peters could easily get into wp or Boland attack.

That was my thinking. 6 test matches after the WTC final until our summer of 26/27. ****, test match cricket is dying hey. I'm so sick of T20 cricket. Can watch a little but it's got too much. Never remember the games like they were special either. It's just money cricket.

When a team as vital as SA to the future & competitiveness of test cricket is only playing 2-match test series against 1 of the big 3 it shows the current state of the format.

We literally may see some test retirements in the next little while. Bavuma? Markram (sounds mad but you never know), Nortje (officially) & obviously Pato.
I don't even watch ipl anymore I stopped after season 2 or 3 I think what season we on now ? The fact that players and teams change so much makes it even more pointless atleast in sa 20 60-70% players stay the same in sides there isn't a team I can support in ipl because it changes players so often.

You are right, he will not get a look in, but he impressed me a lot in the T20 tournament,

But its the ideal time to have a look at a few others, yes you play less tests than others but KG still has an heavy work load from the other disciplines.
KG is chasing records. He already has openly expressed his issues with not enough games. Good luck convincing him he should sit.

For me test caps shouldn't be handed out. You want in the test side prove it at A level and first class level.

You can give guys chances at white ball not tests. Test cricket is sacred.

Don't think Aiden is save enough regarding his IPL deal and top T20 league opportunities to consider abandoning test cricket.

Bavuma I can see due to his fitness concerns . CSA will want him to continue as long as possible due to the elephant in the room.

Nortje & Pato defenitely.

when you are playing the so called lesser test nations then it is the ideal time to look at fresh talent, let them gain confidence and experience, its not about what KG wants or any other individual for that matter,, it is about looking to the future, the Zimbabwe series is an ideal chance to prove they are test material, it is taken far more serious than an A side or a first class game, so i disagree with what you say, as some one who has followed test cricket for over 60 years i have a fairly good knowledge of it, KG rolling over Zim proves nothing, we know he is already a great bowler but Maphaka and Coetzee Sipamla etc being given the experience of leading the attack is a good and sensible thing to do, T20 cricket does not prepare anyone for test cricket, its like chalk and cheese. remember England dropped Anderson and Broad for the West Indies, they where chasing records, it was a chance to give the next lot on the taxi rank a chance to see what they can do.

Didn’t they lose to the Windies in that series? I don’t think we are such a powerhouse that we can choose to rest our best players for a Test Series.

Another argument for playing our best players is that we play so few tests already and our domestic first-class season isn't very long, so continually picking our best team means that they're able to maintain their red ball skills. Even against Zimbabwe there'll be things like properly constructing an innings and bowling multiple lengthy spells that just don't happen in limited overs.

England dropped Anderson & broad for west Indies because of the belief that they wouldn't be effective in the west Indies, they weren't rested. As I recall it backfired spectacularly...

Nevermind Markram retiring, he's done well to sustain an international career for so long with such average returns.

That is not the reason at all, they where dopped/rested because they saw no reason to send two 35+ year old opening bowlers on an away tour against a team that they should have beaten easily , even though they where still Englands best bowlers,

Yes the whole team did not perform, not because Anderson and Broad where not picked, I am not suggesting that you rest all the best players even though a Proteas 2nd x1 would be more than capable of winning the series, but to try a few things,

But KG already knows already how to do that, that is my whole point which is to give Maphaka and Coetzee etc to have lengthy spells gaining experience. to lead an attack and learn, its just an opinion i do respect different views,

I think we all understand your point. But the reality is SA doesn't play enough Test cricket for that to be viable. If we were playing more and longer Test series, then injury would provide those opportunities to the youngsters. And we could consider playing a weakened team against Zim. But as things stand it is not likely to happen and doesn't really make sense.

South Africa's all format tour of India. Still amazes me we only have 2-test series against them now.

1st Test Delhi
2nd test Guhwahati (first test ever)

1st ODI 30/11 Ranchi
2nd ODI 3/12 Raipur
3rd ODI 6/12 Vizag

Great venues lol obviously to keep getting us back for the test pitches we produce for them.

5 T20s venues tbc
9, 11, 14, 17, 19 Dec

West Indies are there for the first time in 12 years before our tour.

Their test matches are in Mohali & Eden Gardens.
