South Africa team selection

International Coach
Only need to take 4 quicks. If we are playing Maharaj and von Berg (even Piedt) extends the batting enough. Morris probably not needed.

Assuming no injuries:
Elgar
Markram
Amla
ABdV
Faf
QDK
Philander
von Berg
Maharaj
Rabada
Steyn

Morkel, Piedt, Bavuma, de Bruyn, Klaasens/Fortuin?
Yeah. Like that actually.

But we seriously need our batsman to be in the right frame of mind this time. I think they have a better chance to be.

I think mentally very different with Faf as captain now.... don't think Amla or ABdV should really have been considered in hindsight. Not the right personalities to lead, great players and important in the senior structure but not as captain.

Career franchise averages:

De Bruyn 46,0
Bavuma 43,8
Cook 39,8
Kuhn 40,7
Moore 38,9
Erwee 37,4

Reeza Hendricks 32,4

Malan 30,1

I realise that franchise averages is a very superficial assessment, but I'm not sure how Malan can seriously be being considered.

Surely Shamsi and Muthusamy must also be in the reckoning for spin options, particularly Shamsi, who on friendly pitches should be the most reliable attacking option (unless going back to Tahir).

I would rather go with Bavuma opening than Hendricks. Hendricks is a poor man’s Alviro Petersen and blows far too hot and cold. Though it’s a dead rubber so why not have de Kock open with Bavuma at six? de Kock can't do any worse than what he is currently contributing with the bat.

It will be interesting regarding the opener for Wanderers if Markram is out. No use bloodling another opener now is there? I'd be funky and go with QDK. I'd rather have Temba at 6 at the moment cos QDK looks pretty loose at the moment

Q De Kock at opener in tests given how loose he is would be a disaster; would also be unfair - opening and keeping in tests are basically incompatible, especially if you end up bowling first...

Understandable. Just mentioned it as a Stop Gap option. It could backfire if he plays a long innings.

Pretty good team this.

I think Shamsi tries to many things which is his strength for limited overs cricket. I've tried to get myself to believe he can be a success at the longer version at the highest level but I have my doubts.

von Berg is more patient with his stock leg-break and then brings in his slider and googly as the variation. His batting could also come handy for the make-up of the team.

Has von Berg sorted out his weight problems?

Look it isn't as bad as some others and I think he can get away with it in the longer version.

But he wouldn't get anywhere at the Titans without passing certain fitness tests I guess. So as long he is in optimal condition for himself which he must be then he us seriously competing for a spot.

Ngidi's approach and action quite reminiscent of Courtney Walsh to me. Good times
Can see where you coming with this. The minute I saw it I thought yup.

Easy amble to the crease, slight favouritism leaning to the left, the size and length of his body and arms and effortless pace hitting the seam generally into RHB.

If he plays a long enough innings for it to have an effect on his keeping he'll have scored 250+ so there won't be quite the same pressure on him to be immaculate with the gloves.

Also very chest-on in his delivery stride.

What has annoyed me is all the virtue signallers on Twitter etc, banging on about how Ngidi and Rabada show how quotas can work. If you think Rabada and Ngidi are in the side because of quotas you need your head read.

If we had it up to the old guard powers that be, no black player would get in anywhere unless they were three times as good. Quotas are the only way of ensuring merit selection. Look how Ontong was treated, and Prince...

But these guys from the 'old guard' aren't running cricket anymore.

Do you really think that Amla, Vern, KG, Ngidi, etc need quotas to play for SA? We're becoming a normal society, slowly but surely, and we don't need quotas anymore.

Quotas at international level are stupid anyway, you want to transform the game build cricket grounds in townships and rural areas, and get cricket coaching in there. But that won't happen cause it's too hard, rather go for the low-hanging fruit of enforcing quotas at international level.
