South Africa team selection

Hendricks was a proper gun back before his last serious injury; he was very arguably one of the best quicks in the world without having played international cricket because of who he was behind at the time. I'm happy for him that he's made it back but he's not the same and List A cricket was never quite his best format even when he was awesome. Watching him play now all feels a bit weird.

I don't think he wants to admit it. It probably makes it tougher knowing that the skill is there, but his shoulder can't hold up.
Yeah, this is the worst thing about it. At numerous points over these few years when he's come back and bowled, he's often looked like SA's best bowler still. It really sucks.

IMaybe determined by the A tour. CSA and selectors have always stuck to regimented plans. Nortje, Paterson, Dupavillon, Sipamla for that ? Dala/Magala only limited overs bowlers and will Hendricks go to this now that he is at the CWC and signed for the Carribean Premier League ?
I can see why they do it, and it gives players confidence in selection based on performance. But it has become a bit to regimented. Seen in this WC selection.

We can not take a bowler of Paterson quality to the subcontinent.

So we've discovered a new way to crash out of a World Cup - pick one of the better bowling attacks we've selected for a tournament and watch them all get injured.

FFS. Must be much worse than they feared as Gibson seemed sure that this was short-term
Yeah apparently he just made no progress. They were definitely expecting him to miss the first game and maybe also the second, but he's just not actually any better at all since when they named the squad. Sad. :(

That article says that Hendricks will only arrive on Monday morning. Is there no way to get him there sooner? Monday is when we play again and ideally you'd want him available for selection for that match.
I wondered similar. I assume it may have to do with Visa issues?

Surely the players earmarked as replacements should have had their visas sorted out some time ago? Poor planning from CSA if that's the reason for the delay in his arrival.

If Hendricks is arriving only on Monday, what about playing two frontline spinners against the West Indies ?

Or is that a myth that Windies are weaker against spin

He hasn't TBH. Can't imagine SL doing what they did earlier this year if they were facing Steyn anywhere near his best. He's generally looked the weakest link in SA's attack recently (most attackable and prone to breaking down as well).

Babar also took him apart a bit, though that was some absolute quality batting.

It was a bit of both. A few innings he was bowling beautifully with his classic away shape and looked great. A few innings he did not look his best and he was obviously struggling. He never really got going again.

Unfortunately, all we can do now is say thank you to a truly great iconic player, and move on to the next group of great fast bowlers.
