If Tayfield is in the side then Waite is a reasonable choice;

....He represented Eastern Province, Transvaal and South Africa in a long career from 1948 to 1966. Although tall for a wicketkeeper, at well over 6 feet, he kept immaculately throughout his lengthy career to South Africa's fast bowlers and spinners, especially South Africa's match-winning offspinner Hugh Tayfield, off whom he effected many stumpings.

....He was also a dependable batsman, opening in the early part of his career, but dropping down the order once Trevor Goddard joined Jack McGlew in 1955. He scored four Test centuries, one against England at Old Trafford in 1955, two against Australia in 1957-58 and one against New Zealand in 1961-62, and had a Test average of 30.44.

Can't go wrong with eithe Waite, Cameron or Lindsay, but with two spinners would be between Waite or Cameron for me.

I think that Waite and Lindsay are better batsman than Cameron though. Cameron's scored consistently, but nothing too big.

Disappointed that S. Pollock couldn't make it! That kinda shows you how good this South African pace bowling attack is, possibly the best of all national ATG XIs (or at least at par with WI). This side will beat most other teams, and give a good fight to all others, including Australian XI with Bradman.

EDIT: And the spin department is well taken care by Tayfield. IIRC he's the guy who makes most (or near to it) appearances in DOG's bowling performances ratings. Ranked the best bowler in the world at one time, and in top 5 or so for a considerable period. http://www.relianceiccrankings.com/playerdisplay/test/bowling/?id=1469&graph=ranking

The pace attack is not as good as the W.I or Pakistan. Donald is a top tier ATG, but Steyn is not there, yet and Procter never got a chance to prove his worth in test cricket and certainly not vs any strong teams or in the SC. Did perform well IN limited opportunities in WSC.

WSC Super Tests = 4

(Bearing in mind that Procter was past his best by 1978 and operating at about 3/4 pace because of a knee injury)

The WI and Pakistan attacks are only marginally better than the KSA attack because of the influence of Marshall or Imran. But I would hazard a guess and say that Procter would have been their measure if given the chance.

I highly doubt Marshall, Holding, Ambrose would have done any better on these batting friendly roads of this era.

Yeah the only argument against Steyn is that he hasn't finished his career yet, which is crap.

People are rightfully going for Waite and Lindsay but I couldnt resist picking the world record holder Mark Boucher for this job.
