Sledging

That's terrible and very embarrassing. I hope things have significantly improved since - there was a pretty determined effort in the aftermath of the SA series in 05/06, and hopefully that will be continued this summer. As I said, I've not seen that myself, but then I'm white, so probably don't attract ****ers looking for trouble like that.

Well, we don't have to hope, because we know Cairns and the others supposedly involved have said its a complete fabrication (which was probably as hurtful to Cairns when it was put to him by journos later as it would have been if it had actually been said on field).
I know what Cairns said. I just hope he wasn't being diplomatic.

Whoever made it up - be it the Australians or journos - should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

A bit of an exaggeration in my experience, although obviously there have been incidents in the past, and I can only comment on anything that's gone on near where I was sitting.
its the same what people and police in vadodra is also saying a bit of an exaggeration on part of symonds......becuse they never heard or saw anything...

Mate, I'll tell you what.....those matches I've been to have been an absolute disgrace. I have not been to cricket match since I got pelted by a plastic cup of beer when I went to watch a match with Australia against India in the 2003/04 summer.. I don't know who threw it, as it came from the 2nd tier of the G. Ruined the match for me. :@

Everyone suggests that the Aussies are racist and so on, but you'll be surprised at the racism displayed by the sub continent supporters.I don't mind someone having an occasionally jab at me, even if it is slightly racial...but when it starts to become violent/abusive....than it changes the whole situation.

Haha, like I give a crap. I'm probably not good enough to get them out via bowling anyway. So if you say something that I feel crosses the line, my reply will be a ball at your head. I'm not advocating others do it, I'm just saying that's what I would do.

Just random banter/gamesmanship is fine though.
Dire example to be setting though. You've basically snapped and succumbed to the sledging, poor effort really.

Agreed - its utterly not acceptable, and if any of my mates did it at the cricket, I'd have words with them, and it would honestly probably end our friendship unless the guy mended his ways. The problem of course at the 'G is exascerbated by alcohol - long day in the hot sun drinking beer produces loutish behaviour - its a very simple formula. I'd be quite happy if they banned booze at the ground, even though I love a beer as I watch the cricket the typical ODI crowd at the 'G over the years has proven it can't handle its booze without acting like knobs.

Although, I reckon 2004 was probably around the nadir of crowd behaviour there. They've made a pretty serious effort in the last couple of years - I think the 'G getting named and shamed as one of the worst behaved venues in the world produced a reaction - so hopefully things are a bit better now.

Interesting (and TBH very noble) viewpoint - willing to make sacrifice for the greater good.

For some (as already mentioned in this thread) that'd be punishing the masses for the indiscretions of the minority dumbaesses - ie, if they can't handle their beer they should be punished, not those who can.

Meh... if you want to get pissed, go to a pub. If you want to throw plastic cups and beachballs, do it in your own backyard. If you want to watch and enjoy cricket, then come to the cricket.

Meh, you bowl a deliberate beamer, and you'll find very few teammates who'll stick up for you, or many opponents wanting to have a chat after the game.

May as well not play cricket.

Whatever it takes!!!
Moving a little off topic, just read on the news website about Roy and the racial abuse he received.

"With a timid Australia insisting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India must pursue the matter, the BCCI refusing to act without a complaint from Australia, and officials in Vadodara denying the racial abuse ever happened, there remains a very real danger that nothing will be done."

Sorry to say, that is a very poor outcome.I wonder why the Australian's are not complaining or anything done about the issue? Considering that issues regarding racism have always been acted upon in a swift manner.

Just a thought thought, from a marketing perspective and India touring down under, maybe it is all a setup to garner more interest in the series coming up? just a though, mind you.
Again, I wonder if the writer was actually at the ground and actually heard anything. Just seems to me there is too much mindless "Indian crowds are racist and BCCI does nothing about them" in Aussie press as there is of "Aussies are lying, no one said anything racist" in the Indian press.
