Should England forget about Trescothick?

So to no one's surprise, Tresco has ruled himself out of the winter's tours. But considering the fact that by next summer he'll be 32 and with a setled Test opening partnership (and the best part of a year to sort out a vaugely competent ODI opening partnership) should we not just forget about him and move on? i suspect if this was Australia they already would have TBH.

I voted no, I still believe he's a much better option than Strauss and is the best one day opener England could play. He's having a rough trot at the moment with depression - if he is able to bounce back then I think he's a shoe in for England.

England have moved on, it's for the best that they forget about him now. I would welcome a return as an ODI specialist, which he undoubtebly is, but Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook are solid openers in tests, there's no need to change it because Marcus Trescothick has been good in the past.

One thing you can't afford on tour is an unreliable player, and in the past couple of years, Trescothick has been an unreliable player.

Strauss has been no more reliable for some time now as an opener; Trescothick is the better option.

Agreed, sort of...I think England needs him in one day cricket and if he makes himself available and they can trust him then I see no reason why he shouldnt be re-installed in a Nick Knight role. With the test team I'm still not 100% sure that Andrew Strauss is a better batsman than Trescothick...but by the time he makes himself available again i(if ever) t'll be best part of 3 years since he played regular international cricket, and if it aint broken (which the test batting lineup dosent appear to be) then dont fix it.

Been far less than that IMO - the only time he's scored many runs of late was against a second-string Pakistan attack.

Since when has a year been anywhere near long enough for England to sort-out anything remotely resembling a good ODI opening partnership?

Thing is, though, we're not Australia. Just because Australia might do things one way, doesn't mean we have to. Look at India, for instance - would Ganguly have got back in there? Not a chance, really. But with India, he has, and so far it's gone pretty darn well. And quite deservedly, too - Ganguly did not deserve to end his career as he would have had he not got back. Same applies to Trescothick IMO.
