Haha, ah boo. Well done Costa Rica.

You can tell they've spent loads of times practicing penalties. Most of them were pretty unstoppable.

Quality shoot out that. Even the penalty saved was bit pretty well.

Plainly none of the takers play in England

Well those pens by Costa Rica were class, as an England fan I can only look on in envy in more ways than one.

Well, I'm glad they're through, Sledger might like to see a team suffocating a team, looking for set-pieces and scraping through, but I could just watch an Allardyce or Pulis side to see that.

Georgios Samaras didn't take. Never really understand it when the recognised penalty taker doesn't step up. Shades of Wigan in the FA Cup semi.

Yeah Sledger would surely be the only non-Greek person on earth who wanted them to go through. Happy with that. Great save too.

I'm guessing he was 5th? For some reason a lot of teams put their best penalty taker 5th, which is pretty stupid because a bunch of the time they're not going to get a chance to take it, and if someone misses earlier on it builds pressure etc.

There's nothing special about the 5th either because if they score then it will continue to sudden death anyway in all likelihood.

Think I agree with this. It definitely shouldn't be any later than the 3rd but I'm not sure 1st-3rd makes much difference. I could be open to convincing on that though.
There was something on it in Twelve Yards and I think they said 1st and 4th were the most important but I may have remembered that wrong.

Hmm. It just seems that the chances of it not even reaching the fourth taker would override any psychological impacts that might make the fourth the most important if it does reach the fourth penalty. I'll have a look for it anyway to see what it has to say.

I definitely wouldn't have the best taker take 4th, because the whole thing could be over by then. But I'd be reluctant to let the best taker go first. If the first pen is missed, I think you really need to have your best taker up next. If he misses then so be it.
