Whose fault is that though? He had more matches against them than all 3 combined.
WI weren't dominating NZ as a team either (they only won 4 of those 12 games and lost 2), so its not a case where his team was crushing the opposition and Sobers wasn't needed.

Interested as to of this was Chappell or Hammond vs Jadeja who the forum would select. An all time great batsman and elite slip catcher who can turn their hand over if required or a situationally good bowler and an average to below average test batsman.

Not an excuse but it's worth pointing out that the only form slump Hayden got from 2001 to 2007 was when he ran in to England in 05. He was terrible vs NZ few months earlier and in the Australian summer of 04/05. Think he got better against the moving ball through out his career and his ton against ROW in 06 was a genuinely difficult wicket to bat on the first day against inform Flintoff.

One of his best.

That was a great pitch too. Plenty of pace and movement early on but good players could score runs on and started ragging towards the end with both McGill and Warne bowling beautifully to a star batting line up. Blueprint for a great wicket

Always good when there's assistance to bowlers but the batsmen also get good value for strokeplay.

Jadeja supporters would have us believe inside India, he is Imran Khan level and outside India, he is Chris Cairn level.

The reality is outside India, he is a bits and pieces player who plays the odd test or two here or there and build some misleading stats based on this small samples. England is the one strong country where he played two long series of more than three tests in a row and has below average bowling and batting stats, which IMO would be how will record would look in SA, NZ and Aus too if he actually got to play full series there.

Which is why I say the primary issue with him is not being sufficiently tested away from home. I would like to see a full series of his in SENA where he delivers the goods, not just pick and drop performances.

It's not easy to perform to the level he performs in India when wickets aren't responsive tbh. Just like visiting SENA fast bowlers not performing to the same extent in India/asia (ex Hazlewood)

Nobody is saying he should perform at that level outside SC. But the question is how much of a mark down would he experience if he played extensively outside SC.

He would average around 32 with the ball and 34 with the bat

i dont think he would, particularly with the bat with more games in Aus, SA and NZ.

His away record is being shielded by the fact that he is playing less in the exact places where extended series will affect his averages, as it has for Ashwin.

Jadeja is being overestimated with the bat.
And the ball honestly. Imagine if Ashwin wasn't there to take the flak what Jadeja's bowling and batting averages would look like if he had longer series. It would IMO look like his record in England, averaging sub 30 with the bat, and over 35 with the ball and taking less than three wickets a game.

Not saying Hayden is a better test cricketer than Jadeja. But Jadeja's batting average is inflated by a few things:

1) Hardly any innings in pace/bounce type conditions.
2) Fair chunk of padding against beaten, ill-equipped teams at home.
3) Hefty boost from not outs batting down the order against tired bowlers. RPI is under 30.

Has missed a number of very bowler-friendly games. Wasn't selected for 4 tests on proper landmines in England (2018). He then plays on a typical Oval pitch at the end that I suspect might have been flattened some more so Cook could score a hundred in his final test. Has missed all but 2 of the entirety of India's test matches in SA during his career. He also missed the series against England in 2021 on some absolute bunsens.

One might say for the last part: oh but he would have filled his boots with the ball. I don't think cleaning up against that England team on those pitches would do anything for his resume. What would we learn from that? He had already proven himself on rank turners with the ball and that England top 7 was poor outside Root.
