Not saying Hayden is a better test cricketer than Jadeja. But Jadeja's batting average is inflated by a few things:

1) Hardly any innings in pace/bounce type conditions.
2) Fair chunk of padding against beaten, ill-equipped teams at home.
3) Hefty boost from not outs batting down the order against tired bowlers. RPI is under 30.

Has missed a number of very bowler-friendly games. Wasn't selected for 4 tests on proper landmines in England (2018). He then plays on a typical Oval pitch at the end that I suspect might have been flattened some more so Cook could score a hundred in his final test. Has missed all but 2 of the entirety of India's test matches in SA during his career. He also missed the series against England in 2021 on some absolute bunsens.

One might say for the last part: oh but he would have filled his boots with the ball. I don't think cleaning up against that England team on those pitches would do anything for his resume. What would we learn from that? He had already proven himself on rank turners with the ball and that England top 7 was poor outside Root.
Give me a Hayden over a Jadeja any day.

Posters here mistake home bullying for quality.

WTF? Are people really saying Jadeja's batting isn't that great and he's stat-padding - especially in the last 4 or so years?

If anything it's the opposite - him and Pant have basically carried India. Batting 6 and 7 and he's far too often coming in at silly scores like 150/5 after the opening pair at one stage was 80/0 or 80/1. He's had to rescue the team from such scores to something respectable that the bowlers could actually work with, also knowing that (especially if Ashwin and/or Lord aren't in the team) the lower order could lose 6 wickets for 0 runs or something mental like that because we like to bat with 3-4 absolute bunnies in our lineup now in the lower order in addition to the top order also being ****.

All this at a time when batting averages have generally plummeted too due to spicier pitches, stronger bowling attacks on average, a mix of the two or whatever else you want to put it down to.

A reminder that the Indian middle order from 3-5 - in any form, old or new, has one of the worst records of a test team this decade (3rd worst infact).

Saying that away from home he needs a longer stretch to prove himself batting wise.

Besides my categorization of skills in the game, one reason why Smith is easier the better cricketer, is the the best ability is availability and Smith plays every game. How much have Jadeja been omitted from?

I believe some posters would complain less about his overseas bowling atleast....
