I'm not saying Ashwin and Bedser are at a similar level outside their comfort zones, Ashwin is bad but Bedser is very poor too, despite playing on much more helpful surfaces. The WPM comments were i reply to @subshakerz argument of Ashwin's pretty 28 avg in ENG but low impact as reflected in his WPM.
This is a point I actually agree with, but this applies a lot to Bedser too. His avg of 28.2 looks good, but a WPM of 2.88 is bad too for a frontline pacer. Sure Bedser might be better than Ashwin there, but he didn't have a great impact here either. A bit more but that's it, whilst Ashwin is one of the greatest match winners ever in SC conditions
3 WPM in non friendly territory with a decent average is sort of my minimum for at least respectable returns for non-ATG bowlers.

What am I missing here? Willis has a better average and strike rate in India than he does in New Zealand - and from more matches.

In fact the only place you could call him "bad" is West Indies, and that was three Tests early in his career.

fair enough

anyway, as I said earlier, Willis is better outside his comfort zone and pretty clearly so, Ashwin is better in his comfort zone and pretty clearly so, it's not ridiculous to go either.
You could say the same for Jadeja vs Willis too but Ashwin is clearly better than Jadeja imo. Jadeja vs Willis would be more of a fight

Will actually had some really good series winning performances in Aus and Ind.

nah, Ashwin is superior by a large margin in his comfort zone because he has a 6 WPM and a 3 WPI in India, Jadeja has a 2.45 WPI in India to Willis's 2.41 WPI in England, both low 20s average, Jadeja more friendly wickets and never had to face the wrath of the mighty windies at home as Willis had to do in his final series. And then Willis is just a vastly superior bowler outside his comfort zone.

Willis vs Jadeja is a one sided beatdown.

Willis had much more friendly pitches outside his comfort zone too though. And Jadeja's record vs the best batsmen and top teams of his era is actually very good

not sure how that works, West Indies/Pakistan were flat (before Holding), India/Sri Lanka were slow and dead, Australia could be said to be bowler friendly but it was not really a swing bowler's paradise. Jadeja has a good record against Australia but I don't see how that beats Willis just being plain superior away from home.

neither of the guys here sniff the ATG tier

both Ashwin and Willis are ATVG bowlers

Jadeja is just a very good bowler, his actual worth is as an all rounder, he is clearly an inferior bowler to both Willis and Ashwin by a clear margin.
