Ranking the Batsmen

There are so many better batsmen that are better than Ponting and Border that aren't on that list it's a bit silly to be honest. It's fairly pointless voting someone like Mead or Boycott, but I'll go with Len Hutton.

It would be interesting to know who these "so many better batsman" are. It's surely not too late to add to the list if a legend has been overlooked.

I'll give you a quick run down of the batsmen who I think are better than Ponting, some of them are in the list already

Bradman
Hobbs
Hammond
Tendulkar
Lara
Compton
Hutton
Boycott
Weekes
Sobers
Richards
Richards
Pollock
Headley
G Chappell
Gavaskar
Sutcliffe
Grace
Abbas
Hendren
Mead
S Waugh
Ranji

A few more to add, but my head hurts theres so many.

The Sean

Cricketer Of The Year
Victor Trumper.

His stats were very good for his time, though not extraordinary, but his aura and reputation among virtually all the men he played with and against (who I consider to be the best judges of all) was that he was in a class of his own, and truly something special.

I actually forgot Trumper was not in yet, I'll change my vote from Ponting (which was more of a joke tbh) and vote for Vic.

Disagree with the ones in bold, and borderline on Sutcliffe. I think Punter's performances over the past few years - even in today's era of roads and high scores - get underestimated a bit on here.

Not to hijack the thread, but even if you knock 10-15% off Punter's average to factor in track flatness and decrease in bowling levels, he's still averaged the equivalent of 50-53 over 100 Test matches, with an exceptionally healthy strike rate, at the same time as being probably the premier one day batsman in the world for the last few years. That's a statistical record that allows him to be considered in the same context as other greats such as the Tendaulkars, Laras, Richards, and Gavaskars, and that's ignoring issues of aesthetics and style. Not necessarily placed ahead of, but the comparison isn't as ludicrous as many people make it out to be.
