he shouldn't have hid behind the rest of the orderIt’s not like he had a short career either. 12 years is pretty solid.

Wut. Retiring at your peak just means you avoid having your average drop because you didn't play tests while declining as a player.Yeah but ABD also ended his career still in a batting peak. I suspect he would have averaged 2-3 points higher with a full career.
That assumes the decline is worse than the bump he would have got averaging maybe 55-60 for 2-3 more years.Wut. Retiring at your peak just means you avoid having your average drop because you didn't play tests while declining as a player.
That's the main issue with his record.he shouldn't have hid behind the rest of the order
As I said, it's silly to give him points for retiring at peak, given no injury. That assumes the decline is worse than the bump he would have got averaging maybe 55-60 for 2-3 more years.
And not all bats end on a long or sharp decline, some just have a slight dip.
he was good enough to come before AmlaThat's the main issue with his record.
It's not his fault he had Kallis and peak Amla ahead of him though but he definitely had a cushion.
I'm not giving him points, just saying the missed out years works both ways.As I said, it's silly to give him points for retiring at peak, given no injury.
I would have agreed given injury, but I won't speculate as he choose to retire.I'm not giving him points, just saying the missed out years works both ways.
Not Amla 2008 to 2013/14. That Amla was a beast and scored everywhere.he was good enough to come before Amla
He was batting 5 as late as his 126* against the Australia quaret when Amla was beyond washed, more washed than Kohli is today. Not Amla 2008 to 2013/14. That Amla was a beast and scored everywhere.
Yeah he retired after having arguably his best series knocking around a top Aus attack and looking like the best bat in the world.I would have agreed given injury, but I won't speculate as he choose to retire.
Sure he stuck with no. 5 too long but I think until Kallis and Amla were there it made sense. He was batting 5 as late as his 126* against the Australia quaret when Amla was beyond washed, more washed than Kohli is today.
