Wut. Retiring at your peak just means you avoid having your average drop because you didn't play tests while declining as a player.
That assumes the decline is worse than the bump he would have got averaging maybe 55-60 for 2-3 more years.

And not all bats end on a long or sharp decline, some just have a slight dip.

As I said, it's silly to give him points for retiring at peak, given no injury.

He was batting 5 as late as his 126* against the Australia quaret when Amla was beyond washed, more washed than Kohli is today.
Sure he stuck with no. 5 too long but I think until Kallis and Amla were there it made sense.
