Players who went up or down in your judgement after going through their records

I think he missed one to Pakistan in 82/83 as well. Was unavailable for the 79/80 tour of India as no WSC players toured for that one. I wish he had, am pretty confident he'd have gunned it. The bloke was an awesome player of spin.
Yeah he has a great record at Sydney which was always the spin-friendly ground. His technique was almost perfect. I am gutted he never toured India too and I'm not an Aussie. If he had one great series there he would probably have a top 10 batsman of all time resume.

He was a genuinely brilliant player tbh, of any kind of bowling. It all just came the same to him when he was in.

I used to wonder why the West Indies guys used to go ****ing mental when they got him out until I looked at his record against them in 75/76 and in that WSC series. They're insane numbers.

Isn't he the bloke that played one of the greatest innings of all time?
Yep. Faced the first ball in Test cricket to kick if off.

Oldest record in Test cricket too.

Picking a specialist batsman who only played three Tests and had a FC average of 21 might be a bit cheeky though.

I'd love to have the time to go through and compile a list of records for all players in all those Test-quality non-Tests in that era (Aus v RoW, England v RoW, all WSC SuperTests) and put them in a table, alongside what their Test records would look like if they were all included as Tests.
This has been done a couple of times, though the only one I have to hand is the one which adds a twist in that it not only compiles the full WSC and RoW records into official Test stats, it also removes the Tests played against weakened sides without their WSC players (spoiler alert - look away now if you're an Indian fan).

I'm not necessarily fully onboard with discounting those matches as in a weird way it actually rewards failure - Boycott, for example, had a poor tour of Australia in 1978/79 against the second string Aussie XI, and so finds his average going up by this analysis because those matches are now discounted! However, it makes for interesting reading.

I've mentioned this before, but all the old WSC Supertest stats I have used to include an Australia vs RoW match at Mount Smart Stadium in November 1978, where Lillee took 12 wickets, Chappell shone with the bat and Richard Hadlee played what would have been his only WSC Supertest (and did very well). But that match has now disappeared from the "official" WSC records.

Do you know why it doesn't count anymore? Seems odd.

Here it is on cricinfo:

I think perhaps because it was scheduled as a four-day match rather than five meant that they didn't consider it a SuperTest, or maybe they did at the time and subsequently demoted it. I just know that in all my old books Dennis Lillee gets credited with 79 WSC SuperTest wickets because they counted this match, but these days he only has 67.

The big take-away from that scorecard for me, however, is that Greg Chappell appears to have been batting on a different pitch to everyone else.

Personally, I still prefer to count this match in the records.

Look up "WSC cricket tour of NZ" on wikipedia. They had a NINE match ODI series (on some random grounds) after the 4-dayer.

Rarely have I felt so vindicated. I wonder if there's a similar list for rebel SA-tour affected sides.

Also worth noting if one removes the WSC-less Aus tests, TOTAB's average is 53.59
